Villa GK Friedel wins red card appeal

Birmingham, England (Sports Network) - Brad Friedel will be available to face Manchester United after Aston Villa successfully appealed against the red card shown to the goalkeeper against Liverpool.

The veteran shot-stopper was sent off in the 64th minute at Anfield on Sunday in a game which the Midlands club lost 5-0.

Referee Martin Atkinson ruled that Friedel was guilty of a professional foul on Fernando Torres after the pair collided and the home side were awarded a penalty.

After the heavy defeat, Friedel questioned the decision to send him off after claiming there was little he could do to avoid the collision.

Villa immediately suggested it would appeal the dismissal and a Football Association disciplinary panel has now overturned the red card.

The American keeper is now set to continue his record-breaking run of consecutive Premier League games against United at Old Trafford when Villa resume action on April 5.

"I just stood my ground and, as the cameras show, I turned my shoulders to show that I didn't try to make contact," he said. "He is the one who ran in and made contact with me.

"Does he have an argument for a penalty sure, does he have an argument for a booking sure, but sending off is very harsh considering he had a defender alongside him?"

Like I said they make their rules therefore the appeal panel can reverse a referees decision if they felt its warranted. In this case they do. But the EFA rule book states an automatic red in a situation like that.

They the FA is breaking the rules then?
If it was an automatic red card there would be no reason to reverse the decision.

In a situation like what? Obviously the "situation" perceived by the ref didn't occur or at least that's what the panel decided.

The ref is a 'jax player'. How the hell could he expect Freidel to disappear = evaporate into thin air?

The damn ball was coming towards Friedel. Friedel got down in the path of the ball and positioned to collect same...what the hell the silly ref expected? Brad Friedel to move out of the way of the ball and wish the ball a save passage into his goal?

Friedel did not make a mistimed tackle! He did not attempt to touch the Liverpool player...forget about an illegal tackle! For Christsake the man did not even try to come in contact with Torres!

...as I said that ref is a 'jax playing man'!

Even an indirect free-kick is the wrong decision. Friedel did not block Torres or attempt to block Torres! Torres ran into Friedel.

There should not have been a penalty but a free-kick to Friedel's team because Torres ran into Friedel ...or an interpretation that an inadvertent collision occured and play allowed to go on. Those were the only options for a normal ref...but this jax playing whistle blower (shake-head emoticon )

The FA Disciplinary Board did the right thing!

No there is no automatic red for a ref's error! The FA has not broken the rules. On facts of the game - the results stand.

              i) Friedel was expelled.

              ii) A penalty was awarded.

iii) The penalty resulted in a goal which stands.

iv) Villa played a man down.

So all facts on the game stand!

It is the matter of ruling of the Disciplinary Board which takes effect on matters that occur after the game. That has nothing to do with "Rules of the Game". The ruling by the Disciplinary Board affects competition's administrative regulations...and how applied!

He went for the ball and didn't get it, in the process impeding the forward. Penalty. Easy as that. Torres ran into Friedel? Even Friedel doesn't agree with you on that. Hahahaahahahahaah!!!

What was the scores at the time of the red card?

No not necessarily. The panel overturned the referee's decision. Do you think a red card decision has never ever been overturned before by an appeal panel?

ok so it did not impact too greatly on the results...

definately not, It is just one of those decisions that rile up your emotion.
In my view if a goalie can get red for that and it stood might as well we play without goalie.

What riled you up about the call. If you run at a player push the ball round him and continue running and end up running into the player you pushed the ball around (even if he was just standing still) the ref will blow the whistle and give you a free kick for obstruction. Where would you have proposed for Torres to go? Wasn't Friedel going for the ball? Wasn't Torres going for the ball? Did Friedel get the ball? Clear penalty.

RED CARD. That was as soft as they came. The Reo cocker one was soft but he game it. The ref gave 2 soft penalty that could have easily gone the other way in the game and to add insult to injury a red card when the man was plainly trying to avoid the colision?
