Portmore Strikers, led by goals from star striker Venicia Reid and goalkeeper Peatria Campbell (penalty), defeated defending champions Barbican 2-1 in a second-leg JFF Sherwin Williams Women's Premier League semi-final at the Barbican Sports Complex on Saturday to advance to the final 5-2 on aggregate.

Strikers won the first leg 3-1 last Thursday at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.

Coach of Portmore Strikers Cornel Clarke was happy with the victory. "I feel good. We worked hard and the girls played to the game plan. We came to win the clash from the first leg and we won both legs which is bonus," Clarke said.

The Portmore-based team took the lead in the third minute when Reid, a national representative, controlled a pass on the edge of the 18-yard box and lobbed an advancing Kahlie Beckford in goal for Barbican. Barbican equalised through a goalkeeping blunder by Peatria Campbell. A cross from the right side by mid-fielder Yanique Goldspring fell from the grasp of Campbell and went into the back of the net on the stroke of half-time.

The second half saw Barbican hunting more goals while Portmore depended on counter attacks. Portmore were awarded a penalty after Barbican defender Kerry-Ann Douglas handled the ball. Campbell converted from the spot to send her teammates into wild celebration.

Near the end of the game, things got ugly and three Barbican players received yellow cards for rough play.

"I am very disappointed about the loss. We lost a few players from the squad this year but that's no excuse. We have players who could do it but they just did not rise to the occasion," Charles Edwards, coach of Barbican, said.

In the other semi-final played at Drewsland, Harbour View swamped Waterhouse 8-2 to go through 18-2 on aggregate.

A date for the final is not yet confirmed as the national women's footballers will be playing in the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament in the U.S.A. </DIV>
