U.S. U-20 MNT Fall to Costa Rica 3-0 In 2009 U-20 CONCACAF Championship Match

The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team fell to Costa Rica 3-0 in the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship final in front of a capacity crowd at Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya, Trinidad.

After already securing their place at the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup by winning CONCACAF’s Group A, the U.S. fell short of winning what would have been its first-ever regional title. It was the third time the Americans advanced to the tournament’s championship, also appearing in 1980 and 1982. Tonight marked the first CONCACAF Under-20 championship game since 1996.

The U.S. entered the game with a 10-game unbeaten streak in CONCACAF qualifying, with its last defeat coming at the hands of Canada in 2002. Before Estrada’s 41st minute goal, the U.S. hadn’t conceded a goal in 628 minutes of CONCACAF qualifying, dating back to a 4-1 victory over Haiti in the opening match of Group B in 2007. Their streak of 628 minutes was just two shy of Mexico’s CONCACAF record 630 scoreless minutes in 1973-74.

"Donovan was excellent. We knew he was a good player, but he really didn't do anything wrong in the whole game and made it difficult for us."

The US usually produce good well prepared teams but I'm not surprised that they lost because talent will triumph most of the times.

Zeppo: Could you clear up that reference to time in which the US team had been preparing for this 2009 U-20 CONCACAF Championships?

"I’m disappointed in the loss but overall satisfied with the way we’ve played throughout the finals. Getting to Egypt was our primary goal here, we reached that and to reach a final is a very good accomplishment for a team that came together in a very short amount of time. We did some very good things, and I think this team will represent us well in Egypt."

      - U.S. U-20 head coach Thomas Rongen, MACOYA, Trinidad (March 15, 2009)

I am not sure what is meant about that "...a team that came together in a very short amount of time"?

That's water under the bridge (if you ax me Karl).

The US squad has accomplished it's objective.

        Next stop: EGYPT!!!

          Nope!
Some at the JFF may believe the USA just grabbed a collection of players a few days before and think that is the way Jamaica should go

I have a feelin' Carl Brown would have been the right MAN for the U-20 job.
