Rio Ferdinand admits Liverpool gave Manchester United a 'rude awakening' after their 4-1 thrashing at Old Trafford on Saturday. The reigning champions were humiliated by their bitter rivals and saw their lead at the top cut to four points and Ferdinand believes the team may have become complacent. One bookmaker paid out on United winning a third successive title a few weeks ago but after Liverpool's win, the race remains anything-but over.
And Ferdinand admits the defeat to Rafael Benitez's side is hard to take.
"We have got a rude awakening," he said.
"None of us has been taking anything for granted but subconsciously there may have been complacency.
"Losing any game is disappointing but losing to a team who we have such a big rivalry with is even worse. And the scoreline takes it beyond that.
"It is very hard to take."
