    I do not know the facts but whereas in 1955 a ref would be considered stepping outside of what would be considered normal behaviour if his actions were as Stennet's...it is a bit much to ask a Jamaican ref to allow the attacker to 'fire' first! That umbrella could be used to kill!

    ...would it be A-OK for Stennet to act as he did if instead of an umbrella that approaching man had a gun?

    Could Stennet have considered and acted on fleeing?

      If it were a player maybe a different standard would have applied? In cricket I never saw an UMPIRE lick down a streaker.
