Why didn't American players go to better paying places earlier. Stop asking stupid questions.
MLS should be ashamed of paying people the crap minimum that they are paying. Best thing that happen was salaries going public.

Get a part-time job during the regular season if you want o supplement your income (don't know what the contract says). Football is not 9-5.
Many expenses are borne by the club so the player is not out of pocket on many occasions for food/drink etc.
Prove yourself before you start call for bigger money...why can't a 22yr old survive on $28K? cool yourself and learn your trade...
If you don't like the salary you can go start working in a job, 9 to 5 with two weeks vacation, where you might make 30-40K a year (if that) ...depending on your qualifications.
The expectations of many youths nowadays and it is seen in the working world , is that they should start off right away with a big salary without even having to prove that they can in fact make a contribution to the bottom line.At a young age winning is not the most important thing... the important thing is to develop creative and skilled players with good confidence.

They could end up excelling in MLS and then moving on to successful careers in Europe. I'd be happy to see it happen, too.
Or they could up flopping out of MLS altogether, as many NCAA stars have done in the past.
Time will tell."Donovan was excellent. We knew he was a good player, but he really didn't do anything wrong in the whole game and made it difficult for us."

EPL TV contract = £1.7billion to 2010. (three year deal)
MLS TV contract $20 M to 2010. (four year deal)
MLS gentlemen is a small time league struggling to get on its feet. They are still in debt last I read to the tune of $350M...
If a starting rookie getting $33K let him be thankful or make sure he got his degree and not one in basketweaving when he was in college. I hope that when these guys attend college they actually take advantage and get their degree for when their playing days are over. Me is talking as if they have no use when they stop playing football in 10-15 years...well, they won't have any use if they don't equip themselves from now for life after football...that would not be any leagues fault but their own.Peter R

If the players are smart they can make appearance money at summer camps and different events.
That pay alot.- Don't let negative things break you, instead let it be your strength, your reason for growth. Life is for living and I won't spend my life feeling cheated and downtrodden.

Talking like them don't have any use? You must not know how hard it is for an athlete to gain employment in the area they studied after completed their pro career.
12k developmental contract is rubbish. 33K in DC,NY and LA is rubbish. Shame on MLS.

The minimum salary is not $28K by the way... I think it is $33K"Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance." ~ Kahlil Gibran

Tilla,
I know that there is the developmental player contract which is less than the starting salary of whatever they call the "regular" contracted players. It is a pittance. What is the expectations of these players by the club? do you know? Are they typically college grads? out of High School?Peter R
