  • Former female national players shot dead

former national female football player Lorraine Mairs was this morning shot and killed in broad day light at her news paper vending stall in Sam Sharpe square.

I spoke to her just last night when I stopped to buy a phone card and we chatted about football as usual.

A few weeks ago when i was going to Monaco she asked me to bring her back one of their currency as she collects foreign currencies.

DAMN this is just shocking,..I am numb...she still played football in the female league for Trelawny

Heard some things but based on where she was killed on the piazza of a bank, the killer (s) should be known soon as they were in the vicinity of several surveillance cameras.

One person who spoke to her minutes before the shooting said she actually saw the men lurking near the bank and thought they were robbers targeting the bank or people leaving the bank.

        JFF Release

        December 17, 2008

        FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The president of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Captain Horace Burrell, the Board and Staff of the JFF would like to express condolence to the family of the late Bernadette “Lorraine” Mairs, who passed under tragic circumstances on December 17, 2008 at the age of 37.

Mairs belonged to that rare breed of individuals who chart their own course and is a true trendsetter in the game of life. This cultured female footballer was the country’s first female semi-professional having played in Finland.

She was an integral part of Jamaica’s pioneer women’s team which participated in the first ever CONCACAF tournament for females which took place in Haiti in 1991. She represented the country for another 10 years after which she exited the national stage.

At the local club level she represented Concord, Boogie Girls, Border Patrol, AC Milan, Rae Town, Untouchables and Trelawny to which she was still attached until the time of her unfortunate passing.

The passing of a family member stirs the deepest pain and the football family is no exception, we are therefore able to empathize with her family and friends who bear the sorrow of her loss. It is hoped that even while we grieve, we are able to celebrate Bernadette Mairs’ fearless spirit and willingness to challenge the unknown.

To her family and friends we say to you from Psalm 30:5, “weeping may remain for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”

Sickko, I am baffled. There have been 209 murders in St James so far this year! I cannot believe this is the same parish in which I attended school. I used to roam MoBay day and night, without fear. This murder and the overall high level of murders is very sad.

This continuous and rampant murdering of our citizens is extremely disconcerting. The Government(s) - the former PNP Gov and the current JLP Gov - seem to have not a solution.

            DISARM!
...make those walking around with guns - BUDS!

May the young lady REST IN PEACE!
