Graham Poll: If rogue whistle did make Ronaldo handle ball ref Howard Webb didn't hear it

Last updated at 8:08 AM on 01st December 2008

Players are always told to play to the whistle and it certainly appeared that Cristiano Ronaldo heard one before deliberately handling the ball, which led to his dismissal.
Law is clear in stating that ‘if a spectator blows a whistle and the referee considers the whistle interfered with play, the referee shall stop the match and restart the play with a drop ball ....'

Cristiano Ronaldo was given a second yellow card for handling the ball in the second half
The key is that Howard Webb did not hear the rogue whistle - nor was it obvious on TV replays - and he deemed Ronaldo’s handball unsporting.
Whether there was a whistle or not, handball is not a mandatory caution.
The player must be seen to be either breaking up a promising forward attack or trying to gain an advantage with his deliberate act.
With the advantage of a slow motion replay, Ronaldo’s first caution could be seen
as harsh, although Webb did not have that luxury.

Looking at the headers this youth has scored, its clear he may have heard a whistle. This was a clear header, so why would he handle the ball? I think the ref got back at him for the sarcastic applaud earlier in the game.

the ball-handling did seem very strange to me given that it was at the perfect height for a spectacular header. Only Ronaldo can answer the question as to why the hands.

Saw the incident on TV - It appeared to me that the foul was on Ronaldo!

Perhaps, Webb has never played the game...but as fact once you are in the air a wee push can 'kill'. Ronaldo was pushed and had to put his hand up to prevent a wack to the face. It just so happens that once up in the air there was no way he could then get out of the way of the ball...unless Webb thought - a) Ronaldo could find traction in the air...or b) Ronaldo had jumped to rise and hit the ball with his face rather than his forehead. Both "a" and "b" do not make sense!

        Refereeing?
