DAVIS. immediate concern was to get the players in right frame of mind
FALMOUTH, Trelawny - Paul 'Tegat' Davis is back as coach of Digicel Premier League (DPL) club Village United and will be on the bench this Sunday when they take on end-of-first-round champions Harbour View in a home game as the return round kicks off.
Davis, who was not retained at the start of the season after taking the team from last place to safety, replaces Dr Dean Weatherly who left the club by "mutual consent", the Observer has learned.
Davis, who was contacted by Kingston-based clubs Arnett Gardens and Waterhouse to fill vacant coaching positions, was retained on Monday and started training that same afternoon.
The former national player told the Observer yesterday that "both parties are okay with the arrangements and we have agreed terms".
He said the negotiations went well and were without "any animosity" after what took place earlier in the season.
His immediate concern, Davis told the Observer, was to "get the players in the right frame of mind" and to "improve their fitness level" as they prepare for the game against Harbour View.
Glen Lawrence, a senior executive at the club, said the release of Weatherly was "amicable and by mutual agreement".
Lawrence said "the management of the club felt the returns from the first round were less than we expected", and pointed out that there appeared "to be a disconnect between Weatherly and some of the players".
He said if there were any problems with the relationship between the coach and the players, the results would suffer.
Village United were in contention for a place in the round final until the last few games when they earned just a point from their last four games - an away 1-1 draw against Arnett Gardens.
Village, who finished ninth at the end of the first round with 12 points, lost to Meadhaven and St George's United at home and to Reno at Frome.
