Ex-Arsenal Star: Players Wearing Pink Should Get The Boot!
Nicklas came off the bench on Tuesday evening to score the winning goal against Dynamo Kyiv. But his pink boots have attracted as much attention as his goal...
Former Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United boss Sam Alladyce once claimed that while he was not in management he had carried out research and concluded that only 40 per cent of footballers these days wear black boots.
The latest player to attract attention due to his flamboyant boot selection is Arsenal's Nicklas Bendtner, who came off the bench on Tuesday evening wearing a pair of pink Nike Mercurial Vapor Rosas. He was instantly subjected to wolf-whistles from the crowd, but the big Dane had the last laugh as he scored a late winner with a good finish.
Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour, the Romford Pele as he is also known, believes things have changed since his day, and that if he was marking someone wearing the same boots as Bendtner, then he would most likely give him a kick!
Speaking to Radio One's Chappers on their football pools podcast, Parlour said: "In our day you had a pair of black and white ones as plain as you like and then you played.
You’ve got to be playing really well, you’ve got to be banging in three goals a game to be wearing them [the pinks]," he said.
"People like Ronaldo could possibly get away with it. But Bendtner has not really been great the last few games. Why would you want to wear a pair of pink boots?" Parlour asked.
"I’m sure Arsene Wenger looks at it every morning and sees people turning up in light green boots, pink boots and is thinking, 'we’ve got to sort this out on the pitch as it does give a bad message sometimes and straight away you look a bit arrogant or flash if you like.'
"Players will probably want to kick him if you have pink boots on without a doubt," he claimed.
"I'm not being funny but if I was marking someone with pink boots I’d definitely want to kick him hard!
However, he did concede: "If you’re banging in three goals a week I couldn’t care less what boots you wear," before adding, "but he’s not really been great and he’s missed chances. I don’t like to see that myself."
According to some sources Nicklas Bendtner was wearing pink boots in order to raise awareness of breast cancer.
