Own-goal lifts Honduras over Mexico 1:0; Both reach final round of World Cup qualifying

11/19/2008 - SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras -- An own-goal by defender Ricardo Osorio seven minutes into the second half gave Honduras a 1:0 win over Mexico on Wednesday, sending both teams to the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.

The result finished Honduras atop CONCACAF second-round qualifying Group B with 12 points, two more than Mexico and Jamaica. Mexico advanced ahead of Jamaica on goal difference, despite the Reggae Boyz’s 3:0 victory over Canada in Kingston.

San Pedro Sula proved once again to be a difficult venue for Mexico. El Tri has lost three consecutive World Cup qualifiers in the city, conceding six goals and scoring only two. Its only win, 1-0, came on February 28, 1965, more than 43 years ago.

The loss in a driving rain before a crowd of 38,000 at Estadio Olimpico marked Mexico’s third straight qualifier, all away from home, without a victory.

Mexico started quickly when forward Matias Vuoso stripped defender Victor Bernardez in the Honduran penalty area, and forced goalkeeper Noel Valladares to parry a shot wide.

Despite a nervy beginning, Honduras almost went ahead in the eighth minute. A precise free kick by Amado Guevara found Hendry Thomas within the six-yard box, but the 23-year-old’s shot blazed over the crossbar.

Thomas, who left the game with an injury before halftime, had another opportunity in the 21st minute, heading a Guevara corner kick over the crossbar.

Mexico increasingly displayed impatience with its inability to gain control of the match and the poor weather conditions. In the 30th minute, Fernando Arce was shown a yellow card by referee Carlos Batres for a harsh tackle on Carlos Costly.

Even harder rain greeted the teams to start the second half. Vuoso, however, almost put Mexico ahead in the 58th minute, but his header crashed off the crossbar.

The miss was to prove crucial, as Honduras took the lead four minutes later. Danilo Turcios delivered a corner kick that was flicked toward the goal by Costly and redirected inadvertently by the 28-year-old Osorio into his own net.

After Vuoso nearly drew Mexico even in the 64th minute from a cross by substitute Carlos Vela, Honduras’ David Suazo forced an excellent save from Oswaldo Sanchez after the Benfica star made a spirited run down the right side.

The best Mexican chance In the 77th minute, as Nery Castillo beat Valladares, only to see another shot slash over the crossbar.

Mexico finished the match with only nine players, when both Gerardo Torrado and Vela were shown red cards in the 87th and 89th minutes.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
