Donovan to practice with Bayern Munich

American soccer star Landon Donovan joined Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich for a 10-day practice stint to stay in shape, and says he wouldn’t mind staying longer.

Donovan, the career scoring leader for the U.S. national team, plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy. The Major League Soccer team missed the playoffs.

Donovan acknowledged this could lead to a more permanent arrangement.

"If January rolls around and there’s interest, and the league is willing to discuss it, I would be excited to talk about it,” Donovan said on his Web site.

                What's Donovan doing at Bayern?

Landon Donovan is training for 10 days at Bayern Munich to stay fit, according to Bayern coach Jürgen Klinsmann. But some German media have called his visit a trial and speculate that he could be a replacement for unhappy striker Lukas Podolski, the subject of winter transfer rumors.

Klinsmann, quite familiar with Donovan from his years as a Southern California resident and his stint as Los Angeles Galaxy technical advisor, said, "He's a good guy, a very good soccer player, and a big personality in American soccer. He's training with us for 10 days to keep his fitness level."

"What does Klinsmann want with the Hollywood Striker?" asked the Bild newspaper, which noted that "Beckham's Buddy" is married to actress Bianca Kajlich (of Dawson's Creek and Boston Public fame).

Bayern interested in deal for Donovan

Bayern Munich is hoping to sign United States forward Landon Donovan on a loan deal similar to the one David Beckham has reached with AC Milan, and possibly longer.

Donovan has spent 10 days practicing with Bayern and will return home Friday. Both Donovan and Beckham play for the Los Angeles Galaxy in Major League Soccer.

"After he presented himself very well, we've agreed to talk to the MLS about a loan from Jan. 1," Bayern coach Juergen Klinsmann said Thursday on the club's Web site.

Donovan to join Bayern on loan

Landon Donovan will join German champion Bayern Munich in a loan deal similar to the one David Beckham has agreed with AC Milan, according to Bayern's manager Uli Hoeness, but no other players will come or go from the club during the winter transfer period.

"He (Donovan) will in any case now play for us until March 15," Hoeness said in an interview posted Friday on the Web site of the Munich-based Sueddeutsche newspaper.

The U.S. forward has just concluded a 10-day practice stint with Bayern, ostensibly to keep fit.
