MILWAUKEE - Marquette's trademark resiliency was once again on display Saturday night at Valley Fields, but for the second time in as many games an early goal cost the Golden Eagles (2-7-4, 1-5-2 BIG EAST). MU fell to No. 20 Connecticut by a final of 1-0 despite looking more dangerous than the visiting Huskies (7-3-4, 4-3-1 BIG EAST) on the attack.

UConn's Dori Arad netted the game-winning score at the 7:53 mark -- a header off a Mike Pezza corner kick -- from just inside the six-yard box.

"We have to do a better job of not giving soft goals away," said MU head coach Louis Bennett. "In the first 10 minutes, we were not as ready to play than we were in the rest of the game. We played basically to plan, with the exception of a few miscues. We wanted to attack them. We wanted to get behind them. We wanted to play quickly and the general run of play was good for us."

Five of Marquette's eight shots on goal came in the second half, including three in the final 10 minutes of action. UConn managed to put five of its 10 shots on target, while the Golden Eagles registered 16 shots total. The Golden Eagles also contained 2007 BIG EAST Player of the Year and M.A.C. Hermann Trophy award-winner O'Brian White. Marked by freshman central defender Paul Monsen, White attempted only two shots.

"They have some dynamic players," said Bennett. "Collectively, sometimes you get in a situation where you're just playing not to make mistakes instead of playing to win. We started playing to win and generated a lot of excitement."

UConn goalkeeper Josh Ford had to make a season-high seven saves to preserve his league-leading eighth shutout of the season. Ford stopped a 20-yard strike from MU freshman Calum Mallace in the 53rd minute in which Ford dove back across his body after committing to the near post. Sophomore Anthony Colaizzi was arguably Marquette's biggest offensive threat, rattling off a season-high seven shots, four of which were on goal.

"There's no secret formula [to scoring]," said Bennett. "We just need to be more composed and put more, better chances on goal. Our team is playing well enough, we're just not scoring well enough. That's a huge issue, but we're creating chances now."

Marquette dropped a 1-0 decision to Wisconsin earlier in the week after having more opportunities on the offensive end than the Badgers. It's the third straight game the Golden Eagles have generated for shots than their opponent. Unfortunately for MU, goals have been at a premium. Saturday’s result was the Golden Eagles’ sixth 1-0 loss this season and fourth in their last five games.

"We just have to keep knocking and being persistent," said Bennett.

Marquette will have another chance this Wednesday, Oct. 22 at UW-Milwaukee. The "Milwaukee Cup," a traveling trophy awarded to the winner of the annual derby, is on the line between the two cross-city rivals. Last year's contest at Valley Fields ended in a 1-1 draw.
