US advances to World Cup qualifying finals

DaMarcus Beasley scored his first international goals in 16 months, Landon Donovan added his record 37th goal for the United States and the Americans breezed past Cuba into the final round of World Cup qualifying with unusual ease.

“It’s never easy,” Donovan insisted after a 6-1 rout Saturday.

But relatively speaking, it was.

After Beasley scored the first two goals, Donovan and Brian Ching padded the lead early in the second. Jozy Altidore and Oguchi Onyewu added goals in garbage time as the U.S. won its sixth straight match.

While some young faces stepped onto the field and excited U.S. national team fans with skill and promise on Saturday night, it was the U.S. team's veterans who delivered the decisive performances in the Americans' 6-1 thrashing of Cuba at RFK Stadium.

DaMarcus Beasley enjoyed his best performance since returning from major knee surgery in May, Landon Donovan delivered a maestro-like performance in central midfield and Brian Ching provided a goal and assist to show why he has settled into the role as the U.S. team's go-to striker.

Their performances helped dismantle an overmatched Cuban squad that showed heart, but had little chance after losing a player to a red card late in the first half. Beasley, Donovan and Ching helped overwhelm the visitors from the Caribbean to help the United States join Costa Rica as the first two teams to book passage to the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying with two games left to play.

A win is a win but this one was against a side that was playing with 10 men and the player who was ejected did not deserve the 2nd yellow card.

Furthermore the cuban team was hit by players who defected to the USA, such is life.

I don't remember the first one, but the 2nd yellow card was unquestionably deserved.

The Cuban made no attempt whatsoever to play the ball. Watch the replay: he wasn't even looking at the ball, just Donovan's ankle, when he cynically stuck his leg out to trip him.

He can't blame anyone but himself.
