Scott (65th)
Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth - Defending champions Waterhouse were held to a thrilling 1-1 draw by Reno in their Wray & Nephew National Premier League (NPL) clash at the STETHS Sports Complex here yesterday.
In wet, muddy conditions before a fair-sized crowd, Brian Wollaston gave Waterhouse the lead in the 16th minute. Reno equalised in the 65th minute through substitute Ricardo Scott following a period of prolonged pressure.
The preceding Under-21 game had to be aborted at half-time because of a ferocious thunderstorm. The Waterhouse juniors were leading 2-1 at the time.
The Waterhouse seniors silenced the Reno supporters with the opening goal, when the tall Wollaston soared high above the Reno defence to head home Garfield Reid's high-quality cross following a surging run down the left.
Reno's outstanding mid-fielder Nyron Davis came close to finding the equaliser mid-way the half, but goalkeeper Richard McCallum somehow deflected his low, bouncing shot over the bar.
And as half-time approached, Wollaston, break-ing free of the Reno defence on a fast counter attack, saw his left foot shot go just wide of McCallum's left-hand post.
Reno pressed hard in the second half only to be kept out time and again by McCallum's superb goal-keeping and errant shooting.
The powerfully built Kirk Wright stole the ball from a defender's boot, but his shot was wide of the mark. Then Davis dribbled expertly down the left and cut across the face of goal, but his powerful right foot shot was pushed over the bar by McCallum and Gary McIntosh, breaking in between the Waterhouse central defenders, placed his right foot shot just wide.
Fabian 'Lexus' Blake stormed down the right for Reno and fired powerfully, but again McCallum proved too good. And Wright's left foot power-house from 25 yards was magnificently snuffled by the 'keeper.
But in the end the pressure told. A purposeful Scott, hounded by defenders, did very well to get his grounder just wide of McCallum and into the net for the equaliser, to the great delight of the Reno following.
Stung, Waterhouse surged forward in search of the winner with Irvino English and substitute Kevin Lamey coming close. But perhaps the best chance late in the second half went to Reno - an unmarked Scott heading wide following Kendrie Quarrie's fine run down the left and excellent cross.
Waterhouse's coach Barrington Gaynor said he was relatively pleased with the point. "When you get a point away from home, you have to be happy," he said. He conceded that internal turmoil over the past week may have negatively affected the Waterhouse players "a little bit".
Reno's head coach Wendell Downswell said he was "somewhat disappointed" at not winning because of "our level of dominance". But he felt "football was the winner in a good, high-quality game".
Teams: Reno - Kenrick Blair, Omar Dallas (Omar Johnson 22nd), Everton Palmer, Omar Blair, Dwayne Williams, Nyron Davis, Nicholy Finlayson, Kirk Wright, Fabian Blake, Garry McIntosh (Ricardo Scott 58th), Kendrie Quarrie.
Booked: Williams (1st), Johnson (33rd)
Subs not used: S Anderson, R Golaub, R Fuller, K Grant.
Waterhouse - Richard McCallum, Desmond Breakenridge, Oneil Thomas, Roger Rodney, Michael Stone, Garfield Reid, Vincent Earle,
