WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The early season awards continue to roll in for members of the Wake Forest men's soccer team as senior defender Lyle Adams and junior goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald received national accolades this week.
After posting a goal against UCLA and making a great defensive play to preserve a victory over South Carolina, Adams was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week. Adams, who was also named ACC Player of the Week on Tuesday, scored the game-winning goal for the Deacons in the team's 3-0 win over UCLA. Against South Carolina, with Wake Forest up 1-0 in the latter stages of the match, Adams cleared a header attempt from a Gamecock player that appeared destined for the net.
Through the first four games of the season, Adams is second on the team in goals with two and is tied for second on the team in points with four.
Fitzgerald was named to Soccer America's Men's Team of the Week and CollegeSoccerNews.com's National Team of the Week. Fitzgerald shut out both UCLA and South Carolina over the weekend, to extend his shut out streak to three games. Fitzgerald currently has a scoreless streak of 310:09.
Deacons Continue Two Impressive Streaks: With Wake Forest's 1-0 victory over South Carolina, the Deacons kept two impressive streaks alive. The Deacs are currently riding a 32-game unbeaten streak against non-conference opponents that dates back to the start of the 2006 season. Wake Forest's last loss against a non-ACC foe came in the third round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament against California.
The Deacons also are owners of an impressive home unbeaten streak. Wake Forest is unbeaten in its last 24 home contests. The streak ranks as the 10th best home unbeaten streak in NCAA men's soccer history. The Deacons last dropped a contest at Spry Stadium on September 23, 2006, falling 2-1 to No. 6 Maryland. Tulsa owns the longest home unbeaten streak in NCAA history at 39 consecutive games.
