Williams: We have to go for it!
    BY Lasana Liburd  (EXPRESS)</SPAN></SPAN></SPAN>

    Sunday, October 29th 2006

It is time to get dirty.

The Trinidad and Tobago national under-20 football team must find a mean streak this evening at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva or face a humiliating exit from the FIFA Under-20 World Youth Championship at the first hurdle.

The young "Soca Warriors" face St Vincent and the Grenadines in the second game of a double-header from 6 p.m. at Couva.

The Dominican Republic play St Kitts in the opening fixture from 4 p.m. and a draw means the host nation would be forced to defeat St Vincent by two clear goals.

Regardless of the opening result, though, Trinidad and Tobago must win to finish second and snatch a playoff berth against the other Caribbean group runners-up.

Coach Brian Williams' reward would be a two-legged tie against either Jamaica or Haiti, who squared off yesterday in a top-of-the-table clash in Port-au-Prince.

Haiti scored 16 goals and conceded once in their opening two fixtures against Bermuda and the Netherland Antilles, while Jamaica managed five goals, with one conceded against the same opponents.

It is not an encouraging sign for Williams, whose spluttering team are yet to come alive and have only a Radanfah Abu-Bakr free kick to show from more than 180 minutes of competitive football.

At present, T&amp;T are bottom of a group that contains Caribbean opponents without a history of success at this or any level. No local under-20 team have failed to advance past the first Caribbean qualifying round although, four years ago, coach Nigel Grosvenor's outfit navigated through the early stages but fell in a playoff with Cuba.

Williams, a former national standout, needs an emphatic response from his charges.

"The way the team performed (against St Kitts) was very disappointing," said Williams. "The players did not carry out the coaching instructions We are struggling to get the right blend."

Dominican Republic coach Ljubomir Crnonrak revealed that his team played 11 games-they won seven-before they travelled to Trinidad last week. Williams' squad have only trained for six weeks and had one international against Barbados, which they won 4-0, and two friendlies against Joe Public and Vibe CT 105 W Connection.

"It is a disadvantage for the coach because even in competition," said Williams, "you are still trying to feel which are the best players for each particular position I still feel we should be doing better and I won't make excuses but we cannot take these teams for granted anymore.

"We have to prepare in a more meaningful way to protect our status as the Mecca of Caribbean football."

Lincoln Phillips, technical director of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (T&amp;TF), blamed the under-20s late start on the executive committee's delay in appointing its coaching staff.

Whatever the reason, it contributed to a difficult week for local fans anxious to see their team build on an exciting 2006 senior World Cup debut.

More than 400 supporters turned out at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar to help the young Warriors register their first win. Yet, three minutes into the fixture, the hosts were behind.

Kittian striker Orlando Mitchum stuck out his right boot to skillfully lob advancing goalkeeper Adrian Foncette and set off gleeful scenes on the visiting bench.

Trinidad and Tobago wasted a penalty in the 43rd minute-St Kitts' goalie Alexis Richards blocked Khaleem Hyland's effort-and six ft two Abu Bakr was a constant threat from set pieces.

But St Kitts, who sported red jerseys with matching socks and black shorts, were the more committed team and deserved the win. Led by perceptive central defender and captain, Javin Matthew, the guests tackled with gusto and, once possession was won,
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

big up Lennie Taylor(Jamaican) since ht took over a year ago he has spent most of his time with this St.Kitts squad. Got the parents involved in fun raising. Took them on their first ever tour of the US and played a lot of games with them.

This is the first they have even qualified forthis round in Trinidad.

        Big up Lennie Taylor

Lennie has done well! ...and, is doing well for himself.

It may be Lennie is also teaching our football leaders a lesson. If fact, Lennie has caused me to look again at our football managers.

Some may remember that I had a conversion withmankine and princess about the suitability of Lennie joining our national programs technical team.

My position was Lennie would not make it in our program. I went further and suggested that Lennie should not be hired. I based my thoughts on Lennie's inability to, as I saw it, work with individuals who would not allow him 'full reign'. In fact, although not said in so many words theunspoken thought was, Lenny wudda 'gwaan bad'.I have not changed my thoughts on that.

This also brings me to, what of Geoffery Maxwell? Geoffery also wudda'gwaan bad'.

I have seen Lennie and Geoffrey at work up close.I have seen Lennie as an assistant to my brother in South Florida...in a program some call one of the most successful across the country.

Aside: In fact, Lennie endorses the program and had his young St Kitts and Nevis charges play practise matchesagainst that South Florida organisation as he prepares his squad...

Geoffery we all know do not suffer fools gladly. He had spent years in the Jackie Bell Santos organisation. That organisation played some of the best club football ever seen in Jamaica...and, Santos did that over a sustained periodwhich unfortunately came to an endquickly after Jackie's unfortunate death. Geoffery is a former coach of the national team who did not and would not put up with the lack of good leadership at the JFF and quickly found himself terminated.

The word I haveabout Lennie's'journey' in St. Kitts (St. Christopher and Nevis) is the FA listens carefully to his every word and goes it very best to provide best 'back office support'. Would Lennie receive thatfrom our JFF? I doubt it!

I think now, asI thought then, Lennie has the goods to make a great contribution to Jamaica...and, he made that known...for Christ sake he visited and laid out his credentials and expounded on his way forward...and as I thought then,I still thinknow, Lennie would not have had the necessary, as has all our local coaches, back office support...and Lennie would have raised hell.

The current football climate as it relates to coaches within...local coaches within the JFF and the leadership *currently in change...would frustrate Lennie into leaving. Unfortunately the locals currently in our technical and administrativeseats are not of the maturity that would allow a Lennie Taylor and not incidentally our football to flourish with such as a Lennie in charge of any aspect of the program. More is the pity!

CONGRATULATIONS to Lennie. May he go from strength to strength! Here's wishing Lennie the very best!

*The previous Burrell administration, I believe, would have also, frustrated a Lenny Taylor and would not have provided needed back office support.

NB: Hoping the coming Burrell administration comes in with a new attitude of - Openness! Integrity! Responsibility! Accountability! A Burrell administration without that always being on an ego trip! A Burrell organisation ever mindful of responsibility to the stakeholders - thoseinvolved in all facets thefootball industry...all Jamaica!

Karl what kinda back office support you talking bout. That is very broad and use to support failure.

Our Football program his lacking money and use that for every excuse. Did you know the St.Kitts parents of the under 20 team played a very important role in raising money for this team?

Lennie used the Ministry of Education to reach and certify coaches in St.Kitts, I don't think that program cost much. He will have heritage recruitment in England where players with St.Kitts heritage who are interested will come and try out for the team.

Sometimes we need to stop thinking about money and do the little things that are going to make us better off. Right now our salvation is with Bora, what if he doesn't sign?
