    What has John Barnes ever achieved as a coach?

    His only experience was flopping with Celtic. He didn't even last a full season before getting sacked.

    That was more than 8 years ago, and he hasn't been employed as a head coach since.

    So why are so many forumites so excited about the idea of him getting the Jamaica job?

      Agreed.

      But don't things like 'experience' and 'credentials' come into play when selecting the right man to guide your national team?

      Especially when Jamaica is in such a precarious situation in WC qualification at the moment??

        Flopped with Celtic?
        I think you need to check his record there!

          Barnes flopped. Losing 5 and drawing two of 20 games at Celtic is a flop. Getting knocked out of the UEFA cup second round and losing in the Cup to Iverness whatever them name was one of the worst results in the club's history. I don't see how his Celtic stop could be considered a success. There may have been social factors that hindered him, but it was still a flop.

            What did Gareth Southgate accomplish?

              There have been are many in the top flight who would die for his record!

              Barnes' record has not pleased fans



              Celtic Football Club has confirmed it has sacked head coach John Barnes after its shock exit from the Scottish Cup.

              In a statement issued at 1715 GMT, the club said it had terminated Barnes' contract with immediate effect.

              Barnes, appointed just seven months ago, is out along with assistants Eric Black and Terry McDermott.

              Kenny Dalglish will take over as interim manager until a new head coach can be found.


              Kenny Dalglish: Stepping in

              Chief executive Allan MacDonald said: "The first team at Celtic is the mainstay of our football organisation.

              "The head coach is responsible for performance, selection, tactics and player acquisition.

              "We're now, as Kenny indicated, pursuing the appointment of a new head coach as quickly as we can.

              "But just to reiterate the point I made, we will not sacrifice quality for speed."

              The upheaval follows Glasgow club's Scottish Cup defeat by Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Tuesday.

              Celtic lost 3-1 to Caley, a result widely held to be the club's worst in the last 30 years.


              John Barnes: Sacked after poor results

              The secretary of the Association of Celtic Supporters Clubs Peter Rafferty is confident Kenny Dalglish can return the club to former glories.

              He said: "At least we are keeping continuity in the club with Kenny in charge. It is important to have some stability.

              "I can't really feel that sorry for John Barnes. He had a fixed idea about team tactics and brought a lot of the problems on himself.

              "It was common knowledge the players weren't comfortable and the supporters were clearly unhappy.

              "Celtic fans have been brought up on a diet of attacking football, glamorous football - but that's not what we were getting."

              Number of 'issues'

              Former director Brian Dempsey told BBC Scotland: "Celtic is a difficult club for anyone to either play at or be involved with in management at any level.

              "As Mr Barnes put it at his press conference, to 'cut his teeth' into management at Celtic was an almost impossible task from the beginning."

              "I think in the short term Kenny Dalglish has to use all the wealth of his experience in playing and football management and fill the breach just now.

              "This is not just a matter of head coach. There are a number of issues that have to be resolved at Celtic Football Club, a number of problems that still have to be addressed.

              "Anyone must never in good management panic and react to situations no matter how dire or how dangerous they are."

                Who business bout many in the top flight. No one would die for that record as a Celtic Coach in a time when there were only two teams in the league.

                He flopped. Club's worst loss in 30 years along with a string of mediocre performances.

                        Not quite true. Maybe it would make interesting reading to hear what EXACTLY he has been involved in since Celtic. Wonder if some investigative reporter out there could give us the scoop.

                          He was not given the support and backing of the club and then the players he inherited. It all came about because there were within the club those who were openly racist and swore to get rid of the darkie!

                          Celtic was in turmoil both before and on the appointment of Barnes. -

                          ...and that match lost to Inverness Caledonian Thistle was thrown by the players. It was a different time and many of the players did not take kindly to being ordered around by a black man.

                              Van Basten and Jurgen were managing players that were pros ... who knew what they were doing .. suh don't confuse the issue.

                              How often we going to keep doing this? When are we really going to address the real issue?
