FALMOUTH, Trelawny - On the eve of the start of the Digicel National Premier League season, Village United have changed coaches as Dr Dean Weatherly returns to lead the Trelawny team.
Club president Steve Bennett confirmed the appointment yesterday, telling the Observer they hired the experienced Weatherly, "as we couldn't agree to (financial) terms with (Paul 'Tegat') Davis".
Bennett, after meeting with the club's management team and working out the budget for the year, said because they didn't want to commit beyond what they know they can handle "reluctantly decided to go in another direction".
Bennett said they wished they were able to "stick our necks out and give Davis what he wanted", but said they wanted to avoid a situation where they were not able to honour this commitment during the season, which could lead to further complications.
Davis was the fourth coach at the club last season and inherited a club mired in the basement, but under his guidance managed to finish the season well clear of the relegation zone.
Bennett said their projections were that it would cost in the region of $1.2m per month to run the club as they have also "significantly improved on the quality of players".
Some funding, he says, will come from the Premier League Clubs Association (PLCA), while the management team will also have to "beat the pavements and try to come up with what we can".
Weatherly, who stepped down from the club two years ago due to his commitments with the National Under-20 squad, will have national goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, who will return to one of the several local clubs he has represented in the past.
Former national players Shane Crawford and Fabian Dawkins are in the squad, along with newcomer Phillip Hall, who enjoyed a successful US College career, while striker Radcliff Hall has been promoted from the Under-21 team.
Bennett said Village, who will open their campaign away to Harbour View on Sunday, will have a strong African flavour with the inclusion of players from Liberia, Cameroon and Ghana. "We are one of two teams representing the entire western Jamaica and as such we have to make certain we put a quality team on the field at all times," he said.
Village will play their home games in the first two or three months of the season at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium before returning to Elliston Wakeland which is undergoing extensive refurbishing to the field and won't be available until November.
