Benitez on collision course with Americans again over Barry deal

    By JOHN EDWARDS
Last updated at 8:09 PM on 08th August 2008Rafa Benitez is heading for another conflict with the American owners of Liverpool after they appeared to question his judgment in the transfer market.
In a stance that has angered and embarrassed the Liverpool manager, Tom Hicks
and George Gillett have stalled over funding an £18million move for Gareth Barry, amid suggestions they feel it would not represent value for money.
Benitez believed a deal was on the verge of completion last week after his Aston Villa counterpart Martin O’Neill finally conceded defeat over keeping Barry and admitted he was ready, reluctantly, to cash in on the England midfielder.

Rafa's target: And Benitez will not be happy if Gareth Barry's Liverpool move falls through
To his dismay, Benitez now fears the transfer is about to collapse, following a week-long silence from Hicks and Gillett about meeting the asking price.

Losing out on his prime summer target would be galling enough, particularly after he led Barry to believe the move would go through and even turned down the chance to sign other candidates for the midfield anchor role, notably Portsmouth’s Sulley Muntari.

The implication that his bosses no longer have faith in his judgment is potentially far more serious and could cause another damaging split that would lead inevitably to fresh misgivings over his future.

Benitez, who was perilously close to being sacked last season after complaining about a perceived lack of urgency in the transfer market, does not take kindly to boardroom interference over signings.
    Angry: Benitez

He stormed out of Valencia four years ago, following a confrontation with sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch over transfer targets that culminated in his colourful claim that: ‘I asked for a sofa, but they bought me a lampshade.’

Anfield officials were convinced they had captured Barry last week, only for Villa to insist on a last-minute restructuring that would have meant paying the fee in two instalments, rather than three.
Benitez still sensed the owners were behind his efforts to pair Barry with his England teammate Steven Gerrard but will now demand answers after an apparent retreat that reinforces the view they may have encountered more financial difficulties.

If they are trying to camouflage a cash crisis, they could hardly have chosen a more provocative course than evidently expressing reservations about the sell-on value of a player who would be 31 by the end of an initial four-year contract.
Benitez was prepared to offload Xabi Alonso, whose £16m price tag scared off Juventus and Arsenal, to accommodate Barry and help fund the deal. He is sure
to go on the warpath if, as he fears, the summer’s longest-running saga ends in bitter frustration.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

Looking Forward To a New Season Written by Ste Speed on August 8th, 2008 </B></B>

So the new season is getting ever closer and we have just over one week to go now until we open our account away at Sunderland. It seems like the last few weeks have really dragged, even though we’ve had plenty of pre-season games to enjoy. To be honest I have found that the pre-season games have only made the anticipation for the new season even stronger.
It has been almost like a tease watching the Reds play knowing that the games really didn’t mean that much other than playing for pride (and fitness). As much as it’s nice to watch these games, as any footy is usually better than none, I have been almost longing for the days when we didn’t have any televised coverage of pre-season. That way we could switch off for a few weeks and the tease of competitive football wouldn’t be quite so in our faces.
So the question I’m asking myself today is; how do I fancy our chances of winning some silverware next season? I think we have a fantastic chance of winning at least one trophy, based on what I’ve seen in the pre-season games. I am absolutely convinced we will definitely win the League (Carling) Cup next season. Some of our fringe/reserve players have shown tremendous promise when playing alongside established first team players. The likes of Plessis, Pacheko, Insua, Spearing, Nemeth, Ngog and others have more than held their own. While they may not all be ready quite yet to step up to playing regularly in the Premiership or Champions League, I feel a team with a mixture of reserves and first team players will more than be able to hold their own in the domestic cup competitions. Especially because other Premiership teams often play mostly inexperienced players too.
As for the Premiership, I’m quietly confident we can certainly compete this season. We just need to start beating the other top four teams and turn more draws into victories. It really is too hard to predict what will happen this season. I do feel however that Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal have not improved their squads and that in itself gives me encouragement that we will be much closer this season. I’m definitely not as optimistic as previous years, possibly for self preservation as much as anything, but as I said I’m quietly confident.
Robbie Keane has shown glimpses of an understanding with Torres in the brief time they’ve played together so far. This is a very exciting prospect and with Torres showing that he is continuing where he left off last season, I can see plenty more goals coming from our strikers. Ngog may only play as a backup striker but based on his finishing in the pre-season games it appears he has a terrific eye for goal. Clearly his statistics for the French youth sides are more of an indication of his abilities than those from his last season at Paris St. Germain.
I am hearing a rumour today that Yossi Benayoun may be heading to Roma. I sincerely hope that this doesn’t happen, in my opinion Yossi is one of our most skillful and creative players. As we saw last season he has a great eye for scoring and creating goals and I think he has been the best player in pre-season. I know that Rafa is still trying to finance the Gareth Barry deal but selling important squad players is not the best way to do this. I have heard that we’ve had offers in the region of three million pounds for Voronin and six million for Pennant. If we can get those type of figures I would be pleased to let them go to fund the first installment on Gareth Barry. I’d much rather say goodbye to Voronin and Pennant (who has hardly figured at all in pre-season) than quality players like Benayoun or Xabi Alonso.
So overall, based on pre-season so far, the signs are very encouraging for the upcoming season. If we can keep the important players from getting injured and continue the development of the younger players we will have a really decent squad this season. The other important factor is that we must hold on to the talented players whilst adding new ones. If we can put these things into place this year then we should have some exciting times ahead of us over the next nine months.
    Ste Speed

      Financial doubts over Barry bid

Fears have been expressed over the future of Liverpool's bid to sign Gareth Barry as the club's ownership battle threatens to flare up again.
      Benitez: Strapped for cash

The fact the club's American owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, have yet to produce the promised short-term loan to allow boss Rafael Benitez to complete the £18million transfer has promoted speculation the deal could soon be dead.
Benitez has waited all week for money to be put in place to allow him to end the Barry saga before he sells any more players to fund the deal.
But the longer the delay, the more likely it becomes that Benitez could be forced to abandon the long-drawn-out deal.
The failure to produce funds which Benitez expected a week ago has prompted long-term suitors Dubai International Capital to let it be known they are still waiting in the wings with their own proposals for the club.
A source close to DIC said: "Just because it is has been a quiet summer does not mean DIC have lost interest. They are happy that things have now become low key, and they are awaiting developments."
And there is also speculation a former prospective buyer of the club, and several rich American-based Liverpool fans, have let it be known they are prepared to help the club out of their cash problems.
Observers believe plans for the new stadium have as yet not included confirmed building contracts or the lease being agreed with the local council.
The club's owners are also going to have to find cash soon to fund the stadium as well as re-finance the current loans.
A Liverpool Council spokesman explained the current situation over the lease for Stanley Park, claiming it should be signed in a month.
He said: "It is normal legal procedure for companies to wait three months after the granting of planning permission before signing the lease.
"This is because under planning laws, the public have a right of appeal for three months after the planning permission is given.
"We expect the lease on Stanley Park to be signed in a matter of weeks."
But the delay over the Barry deal is beginning to embarrass Liverpool. As soon as it was suggested the American owners were looking to borrow money to fund the deal, there were City sources - admittedly close to the DIC bid - who insisted borrowing would be difficult in the current climate.
