Ousted Girlz seek lift against Puerto Rico in last game of U

      Final hurrah!
Ousted Girlz seek lift against Puerto Rico in last game of U-17 Championship
      Monday, July 21, 2008

BACOLET, Tobago - With no chance of advancing to the semi-finals of the 2008 CONCACAF Women's Under-17 Championships, Jamaica will seek to close their campaign on a high note today against Puerto Rico at the Dwight Yorke Stadium.

Match time is 5:00 pm (4:00 pm Jamaica time).
Puerto Rico are also out of contention to advance to the last four as they, like Jamaica, lost both their Group B matches to regional power houses Mexico and Canada.
But the battle of the two winless teams, which precedes the feature match involving Mexico and Canada, could serve to demonstrate that Caribbean teams are slowly closing the gap on their most established North Americans.
It has now become difficult to predict the starting line-up of Jamaica's head coach, Brazilian XI Luciano Gama. In the previous games, he made last-minute changes to previously named teams.
What will be certain, however, is the unavailability of centre back Melissa Madden, who dislocated her shoulder in the Canada match on Saturday.
Kession Walker, who replaced Davia Smith in the said match, is now a strong contender to start after a commendable display, and is likely to take Madden's spot and partner Zovel Hyre - who returns from suspension.
Gama faces a slight dilemma with his strike force. The skillful Shanika Williams enters the fray after her dazzling display, while Vanessa Ramsay, who was surprisingly left out of the second match, could be in for a recall after the speedy Carla Daniels failed to make an impact.
Nonetheless, the young Reggae Girlz will be eager to dish out a beating on the Puerto Ricans, after coming out on the losing end of a pulsating and nail-biting seven-goal thriller against Canada, which they lost 3-4.
It was by far the best match of the tournament and coach Gama is hoping the girls will carry that momentum into this game, which is of academic interest only.
"We are out of the competition, but it is important that we go back home with a victory. I told them that it is also important to play for Melissa (Madden) too," Gama told the Observer yesterday.
"When I think a little, Puerto Rico are going to be a difficult game too. Puerto Rico are not bad.it's going to be not so different from the games against Mexico and Canada," he said.
Mexico and Canada now await the other two semi-finalists from Group A, currently being led by the United States followed by Trinidad and Tobago, El Salvador and Costa Rica respectively.
The Jamaican delegation will depart the island of Tobago immediately after their game, in order to catch their connecting flight from Trinidad tomorrow morning.
Squad - Goalkeepers Keeley Williams, Shena Wint; defenders Zovel Hyre, Melissa Madden, Jodian Morris, Nugene Negent, Kession Walker, Ornella Gray, Monique Pryce (cpt); midfielders Sasalee Cooper, Cathryn Rogers, Sashana Campbell, Carla Daniels, Shanise Foster, Shenika Williams, Davia Smith; forwards Trudi Carter, Elise Procope, Toni Cowan, Vanessa Ramsay.

BACOLET, Tobago - Jamaica's Under-17 women's team's central defender, Melissa Madden, will be out of competitive action for roughly six weeks after fracturing her left shoulder.
Jamaica's team doctor, Mark Sanderson, assists a tearful Melissa Madden at the team hotel shortly after arriving from the Scarbrough Regional Hospital where X-ray showed the player had suffered a broken collarbone sustained during Jamaica's match versus Canada at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago on Saturday in the CONCACAF Women's Under-17 Championships. Madden, a student of St Jago High, sustained the injury during Jamaica's do-or-die match against Canada on Saturday at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, during the ongoing CONCACAF Women's Under-17 Championships.

"Melissa had a collision with another player and she sustained a fracture to the distal third of her left clavicle.
"She was in a lot of pain so we took her to the hospital where we gave her some intra-muscular analgesic and subsequently did an X-ray of her left shoulder which demonstrated the fracture," team doctor Mark Sanderson said on return from the Scarbrough Regional Hospital here in Tobago.
A tearful Madden had to be replaced in the 71st of the match, while her country's team was locked in a fierce battle against the Canadians which they lost 3-4.
She will watch from the stands today as Jamaica play their final match against Puerto Rico - an affair of academic interest only.
"She's now on oral analgesic which should be sufficient to heal the injury. I'll say four to six weeks, but I'm not an orthopedic specialist, but when we get to Jamaica we'll have her reviewed by a specialist," Sanderson said.
Team manager Elaine Walker-Brown, says the diminutive and dynamic defender was hoping she'd be able to play in the final game, as the Girlz hope to close their campaign on a high note.
"She's reacted very hard to her situation because she is one of the fighters, and at one stage, she was saying to 'Doc', 'How long is this going to last?'.and I know that she was saying it with the intention that it wasn't that bad and she'll be ready to play on Monday (today)."
"That's how she is and I think the team is going to rise to the occasion for her," says Walker-Brown.
