Former national youth forward, Christopher Nicholas, apparently wants out of Tivoli Gardens, as for the past two weeks, he has been training at Portmore United.
The burly striker, who has fallen off the national radar since helping Jamaica reach two youth World Cups, is apparently not comfortable at Tivoli, and in a bid to revive his career, is considering a move to the Sunshine City.
"He has been training with us for the past couple of weeks, however, that is all, nothing is confirmed," said Portmore coach, Linval Dixon." We are, however, optimistic about the development, as Nicholas is a proven goal scorer, and if he comes, he will come with a name, and would fill in for Roen Nelson, Wolry Wolfe and Rudolph Austin, who are playing in the Trinidad and Tobago Pro League," the former national defender added.
Standout
A bustling striker with an eye for the goal, Nicholas was a standout during Jamaica's two successful youth World Cup campaigns - New Zealand 1999 (Under-17) and Argentina 2001 (Under-20). However, since his outstanding showing at the youth World Cups, Nicholas has failed to make the transition to the national senior team due to struggles with fitness and injuries.
These reasons, among others, it is reported, has also resulted in the 25-year-old not securing a regular spot on Tivoli's teams.
"His contract is up, and if he wants to move on, there is nothing we can do about it," said Brian Rose, manager of Tivoli. "Maybe he wants a change in environment as he thinks this will help his career, and if that is the case, we wish him all the best. He is a quality player ... We have no animosity towards him," he added.
Last season, there were reports that Nicholas was contemplating a move to Harbour View. However, due to difficulties with his contract, he remained in West Kingston.
