Burrell challenges politicians to do more for Westmoreland football

President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Captain Horace Burrell, has lashed out at political representatives in Westmoreland for their failure to secure a mini-stadium for the parish which would serve as a nursery for the honing of sporting talent in the parish.

"I know you have good football players here, two of which are currently in the national squad. If you had better facilities here, it would have been six, because the talent is here. And I am going to blame that on the lack of proper facilities at Frome. I am going to blame your political representatives," Burrell said during his address at the annual awards ceremony of the Westmoreland FA Major League on Thursday night at the Negril Golf Club.

My mission, my dear friends, is to see football develop from the grassroots and to provide facilities which will allow youngsters to properly train and develop their skills."

Burrell directed the parliamentary representatives in Westmoreland to copy what former finance ministers Omar Davies and Edward Seaga did in securing mini-stadiums in their constituencies.

"Why can't we have in Westmoreland a similar facility as we now have in Arnett Gardens for example? Years ago when you looked at the facility in Arnett Gardens it had a lot of stones...the surface was just a dirt track and Dr Omar Davies, the then minister of finance, obviously used his clout, called his friends and got the ball a rolling," he noted.

Burrell, whose company The Captain's Bakery which sponsors the Westmoreland Major League, pointed to how both complexes brighten otherwise dull surroundings. "The Arnett Garden Sport Complex is a sight to behold. It is beautiful. They have seats to accommodate their spectators, they have a fairly good playing surface and an atmosphere which certainly I would like to see here.

The same thing goes for Tivoli Gardens and Waterhouse," he said.
The JFF boss implored the audience to accept nothing less than what exists in Kingston for the Frome Sports Complex.

"Ask your political representatives to go to Arnett Gardens, go to Tivoli Gardens and look at what they have and to give you the same at Frome. That is what I want you to do," Burrell stressed.
