NEUSTIFT, Austria (AP) - Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa would be "delighted" to see Cristiano Ronaldo leave Manchester United for Real Madrid.
"If Ronaldo leaves, then United will lose the best player in the world," said Arbeloa, a former Madrid player. "I would be delighted if he leaves. If he goes to Madrid, that would be phenomenal."
Ronaldo has given hints that he wants to move to Madrid, although United insists he is not for sale.
Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez, who plays for FC Barcelona, said Tuesday at the team's base camp for the European Championship that he would also welcome a move by Ronaldo because it would benefit the Spanish league.
"He's currently one of the best players in the world," Xavi said. "It's always good to have quality players in our league."
Ronaldo, who has been at Old Trafford for five years, scored 42 goals last season to help United become European and Premier League champions. Madrid coach Bernd Schuster told German television channel DSF at the weekend that his club was willing to spend what was necessary to sign Ronaldo - even if it meant a fee of €100 million (US$155 million).
