Capello: Scolari Won't Ruin England
England boss Fabio Capello has welcomed Luiz Felipe Scolari as the new manager of Chelsea, and rubbished claims that his arrival in the Premier League would harm the national team…
Many believe Scolari’s appointment as Blues boss will herald an influx of Portuguese and Brazilian talent – or rather a further influx, given the west London club have no less than seven such players on their books already.
Such claims are not unfounded, however, given the flurry of speculation suggesting the likes of Ronaldinho, Deco and Ricardo Quaresma could be on their way to Stamford Bridge.
The abundance of foreigners plying their trade in the Premier League is a contentious issue, with recent figures indicating the number of Englishman participating in their own league is at an all-time low.
But Capello prefers quality over quantity, and does not believe Scoalri’s arrival will in any way effect the England national team.
Good Enough
“We will have to wait and see what happens, but if Chelsea find good English players I am sure they will still use them,” the former AC Milan coach said.
“Numbers are not always the most important thing anyway, it always depends on the level of the players. As a club manager, if you have 14 very good players, that's enough, you don't need a lot more than that.
“There are more players than that I can use in England, and I think the quality is high enough.”
Lion
Capello’s view that Scolari will give local talent every chance to flourish are given credence by the fact the current Portugal coach is a known admirer of Chelsea skipper John Terry.
Some have hinted Big Phil may look to instil more authority in Portuguese centre-half Ricardo Carvalho, but the former Brazil boss seems likely to retain Terry as the Blues’ central figure.
“John Terry is a pure English lion,” Scolari said last year. “This is a guy who breaks his head for the team, a guy I would love to have in my team.”
