Jamaica's Caribbean friendly series culminates today when they play Grenada at 3:00 p.m.(local time) at the National Stadium in that country's capital, St George's.

The Reggae Boyz won the first game of the series 5-1 against St Vincent and the Grenadines last Tuesday then earned a late 1-1 draw against Trinidad and Tobago in Port-of-Spain on Saturday.

Today's game against the Spice Boys will be the final contest before the Reggae Boyz play The Bahamas next Sunday and Wednesday, as they kick off their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.

"We want them to keep progressing," said technical director René Simoes from St George's yesterday. "We have to reshape the team and keep on improving, that's why these games are so important."

    The 3-5-2 formation
Simoes has said he will keep using the 3-5-2 formation and midfielder Omar Daley is expected to replace Oneil Thompson in the starting line-up from Saturday's game.

Defender Tyrone Marshall of Toronto FC in the US Major League Soccer (MLS) missed the first two games due to personal reasons, but joined the squad yesterday.

Grenada, ranked 143rd in the world, 45 places lower than Jamaica, are also preparing for the first leg of a tough World Cup qualifying game against Costa Rica on Saturday.

Captained by Anthony Modeste, who plays locally for National Premier League champions Portmore United, Grenada are well aware of what they are up against.

"Seeing Jamaica play recently against St Vincent and Trinidad, we know what they are capable of," said Grenada coach Norris Wilson, a former national player between 1975 and 1986.

"They are rugged and quick - which is similar to how we play - but they have a lot more professionals which will help them to sustain their concentration longer."

Grenada's most experienced players are striker Jason Roberts, who plays for Blackburn Rovers in the English Premier League and midfielder Shalrie Joseph of MLS team New England Revolution. Roberts has scored 12 goals in 25 appearances.

    The bigger picture
Grenada are coming off a 10-0 goal fest against the US Virgin Islands in their first World Cup qualifying game on March 26. Since then they have lost 0-2 to Trinidad and drew 1-1 with an England 'C' team.

Wilson said he was clear about his game strategy against Jamaica as he is focusing on the bigger picture.
"We are going to play a tight defence to make it more difficult for Jamaica to get through," said Wilson.

"This game is really preparation for our game against Costa Rica. They have a lot of attacking flair, so we will use it as a practice game to shut out Costa Rica."

In four previous meetings to qualify for either the World Cup or the Gold Cup, Jamaica have won on every occasion, but Grenada defeated Jamaica in a friendly - 2-0 on August 1, 2001 in St George's.

This, said Simoes, is proof that no team can be taken lightly.
"Grenada have beaten Jamaica before, so it's not going to be easy. These games we are playing are tough," said the technical director.

The Reggae Boyz return home tomorrow.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

Good question. We know Daley has played the role that young Austin is now assigned. Maybe Austin is more reliable when it comes to his defensive duties. Daley is great going forward but he maybe suspect at picking up his defensive duties after one of his forward raids.

BTW, What is the deal with Khari Stephenson? We have all these names on paper that is suppose to be able to pick up the mantle in the defensive midfield role and yet still we are reminiscing about Cargill. The list include Oniel Thompson, Rudy Austin, Evon Taylor, Khari Stephenson, Richard Langley, Nicholai Findlayson, Omar Daley, and even Tyrone Marshall. None of these players fit into Simoes vision of what it takes to play this position? I guess name pon paper is jus dat "name pon paper".

Is The Prof serious! His statement could be taken as an affront to the diginty of players such as Ruolph Austin, Omar Daley, Tyrone Marshall, Khari Stephenson, Damien Francis and even Evon Taylor whom have all played that position.

He should look at them all before making his statement. Has he offered a call to Damien Francis?

Maybe I'm reading too much between the lines, and The Prof's statement is really just a challenge for someone to step up and grab hold of the position as their own.

Zeppo submitted a post where Chivas found a player through a TV search called Sueno (A-La-American-Idol). Well maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea if the JFF does a similar islandwide search for a Peter Cargill. Have each parish send their best 10 such midfielder (10 x 14 = 140) to the Harbour View Stadium for a one week tryout. Just midfielders!! Have Simoes be one of the judges while the players are taken through a series of routines which will test their ability to be the ultimate Peter Cargill. Eliminate 40 players on the first day. Then have the top 100 vie through a 4-day elimination process. The winner on the final day should be who Simoes is looking for. The top five runners-up should be considered for future invitations to training camps.

To underwrite the event, solicit advertising bucks from one or couple of the following companies: Sandals; RIU; Red Stripe; Bigga; Mother's; Sherwin Williams; Lee-Chin Group; Western Union; Home Depot or even UPS.

For additional revenues, sell Television rights to one of the following: Univision; Galavision; Sportsmax; FOX Sporstworld or ESPN.

Note: Do not charge gate fees for attendance but provide adequate securiy. This will bring in a sizeable crowd which will look good on TV.

maybe its the portmore man dem boosting him.. Why not marshall? That position require thinking... Dont recall Omar as a thinking player but maybe he matured. Langley may fit that role..

Yes Marshall maybe the best option right now but he may need Marshall on the right as he has been scoring from that position. To counter Bibi on the left.

Reading the game right make up for pace in a lot of cases. Marshall make timely runs and not just over drippling or overlapping following the ball as so many of our wingbacks do.

Playing with 5 midfielders also offer some coverage as well. Granny score 3 from the right wing in the last two games he played but one was offside, so him and Bibi are dangerous playing wide.

maybe looking for a stronger tackler and ball reader in that position.
