Under-20 Girlz to start camp WC
Wednesday, June 04, 2008
Three overseas-based players Kemeisha Woodfine, Cathlene Richards and Jovell Hyre will join up with 24 other players as the U-20 Reggae Girlz returned to camp Monday to fine-tune for their final-round World Cup Qualifiers in Puebla, Mexico, later this month.
The US-based Woodfine could start training with the team from as early today, while the two Canadian-based Rogers and Hyre are expected in the island later this week.
"... That squad will continue training straight... until our departure to Mexico when the final 20 (players) will be selected," coach Xavier Gilbert said.
The three bring the overseas-based contingent to six, with veterans Kimmia Parker, Shakira Duncan and Christina Murray already in camp.
Gilbert said the team's preparation has been going well, though the players have still not reached the maximum level of fitness.
"This is the final phase of our preparation so we'll be working on some tactical things this week as we prepare," he noted.
Jamaica will play in Group B of the Qualifiers alongside Canada, Costa Rica and Nicaragua at the Estadio Cuauhtemoc in Puebla June 17-28.
The top two from the two groups will advance to the semi-finals, with the top two advancing to the finals.
Rest of squad:
Sashana Campbell, Natasha Douglas, Trudy-Ann Douglas, Semone Honeghan, Nicoda Linton, Shanique Mitchell, Monique Pryce, Kenesha Reid, J'Vonelle Simpson, Peta-Gaye Soman, Shanise Steele, Teashian Thomas, Shavine Webster, Tasheka Gordon, Jody Bethune, Stacy-Ann Walker, Shanise Foster, Kessian Walker, Abigail Walker, Taniesha Chickory and Nugene Nugent.
