T&T players win pay dispute with TTFF

Trinidad and Tobago's Soca Warriors, who campaigned at the FIFA World Cup two years ago, have won their pay dispute case against the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation.

On Monday, the Sports Dispute Resolution Panel here ruled that the 16 members of the team that made their historic outing at the mega event in Germany, were entitled to 50 per cent of the World Cup profits earned by the local federation.

"It seems to me that the applicants (players) have done enough to raise a case for the TTFF to answer in this respect," arbitrator Ian Mill, QC, was quoted as saying.

"I, therefore, find, not without some hesitation, that Mr Warner (Jack Warner) did promise on June 12, 2006, to increase the players' share under the commercial revenues sharing agreement from 30 per cent to 50 per cent, in order to obtain 'practical benefits' for the TTFF, and that therefore, that promise was, and is, legally binding on the TTFF."

Following the World Cup, the players had contended that they had been promised additional money by Warner, the special adviser to the TTFF, for the campaign in Germany.

The players rejected an offer made by the TTFF and subsequently initiated a lawsuit to recover the money they believed was owed them. This resulted in the players involved being slapped with a ban.

Last year, both parties agreed to put the issue before arbitration.
Media reports have indicated that each player now stands to receive £125,000.
The 16 players involved in the dispute were Chris Birchall, Atiba Charles, Cyd Gray, Marvin Andrews, Ian Cox, Cornell Glen, Shaka Hislop, Avery John, Stern John, Kenwyne Jones, Kelvin Jack, Collin Samuel, Brent Sancho, Aurtis Whitley, Evans Wise and Anthony Wolfe.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
