  • M'haven clip Rivoli for sole lead in NPL play-offs

For the second time on 3 days, the Newsletter has screwed up a sports report. Perhaps it's an opinion column, huh HL?

Firstly, referrring to the pic below, Keammar Daley is not in that photo below. Secondly, I don't see any player "turning away" from another player. I don't know Enrico Beech, but the way the Newsletter has been going, I can bet some Cash Plus kinda money that Beech is not in that pic as well!

I guess it's easier to count hotel stories.

KSAFA champions Meadhaven United assumed sole leadership of the National Premier League (NPL) play-offs following a 3-2 win over Rivoli FC in a top-of-the-table clash at Prison Oval yesterday.
An own-goal from Luke Soares in the 10th minute put the visitors on even terms after Devon Hodges had given Rivoli the lead three minutes into the contest.
Dawayne Smith gave Meadhaven the lead in the 18th minute and Leighton Neita added another in the 45th.
But a Patrick Beech penalty in the 76th minute brought Rivoli hope and ensured a tense finish.
"This game was really a tough one, but the players stuck to the task and got the job done. They showed they're true champions when they came back from the early goal,"said assistant coach, Lijyasu Simms.

Meadhaven lead the standings with maximum six points - three more than Rivoli and York, who turned back Wadadah (yet to get a point) 1-0.
Spectators had barely reached the venue when Hodges tapped home a rebound after goalkeeper Andrew Gibson failed to handle Derrick Planter's free-kick three minutes into the match.
But the lead was short-lived as Soares headed past his own goalkeeper from a corner seven minutes later.
Meadhaven took the lead in similar fashion when goalkeeper Shannon Bartley palmed Dawayne Smith's corner into his own net.
Shawn Hunter and Neita both wasted good opportunties to extend Meadhaven's advantage. However, the two combined to give their team a third goal on the stroke of half-time when Neita stabbed home a volley from Hunter's left-sided cross.
The introduction of Fidel Anderson, Enrico and Beech in the second-half saw an improvement in the home team's attack.
In the 63rd minute Soares had Rivoli's first real attempt at goal, but his well-struck volley dipped just behind the bar.
Minutes later, Beech controlled on his chest inside the area, but could only direct his shot to Gibson.
Rivoli's efforts final produced a goal when Beech flicked onto Hodges and the latter was taken down inside the box by Kenrick Brown with only Bartley to beat. Beech converted the resulting kick.
Rivoli's coach Jermaine Thomas said the loss was a minor set-back and his team will rebound from the defeat.
"We really conceded two poor goals, so defensively we made some mistakes," he said.

"Wrong" seems to go hand in hand with that publication.

I just checked and the same caption and photo are in the printed paper. But couldn't someone at least make the change in the online edition? Or is everyone currently at Mahoe Bay?

            Wadadah stunned at home

Wadadah's hopes of returning to the top flight were dealt a severe blow, as a 1-0 loss to visitors York at the Urban Develop-ment Corporation field in Montego Bay yesterday has left the western team reeling after a second straight loss in the National Premier League (NPL) play-offs.
In contrast, Meadhaven took another confident step towards historic promotion to the top flight, when they overtook group leaders Rivoli following a 3-2 win at the Spanish Town Prison Oval in the day's other game.
            Goal-less first half

Wadadah spurned several opportunities in a goal-less first half, before York substitute Kevin Bascom came on the pitch to dent their expectations of a win and a crucial three points with a 63-minute goal.
The home team had dominated possession in the early going and straightforward opportunities fell to both Jeremy Bucknor and Calvin Coward. However, the goal-shy pair constantly failed to find the back of the net. To add to their woes, Wadadah captain Rohan Reid had his shot from the penalty spot turned out of goal by York custodian Donald Atkinson.
Wadadah, who plied their trade in the top flight two seasons ago, now find themselves languishing at the bottom of the table.
At Prison Oval, a youthful Meadhaven recovered from conceding an early goal to leave a more experienced Rivoli stunned.
Veteran striker Devon Hodges put the home team ahead when he pounced on a poor clearance from Meadhaven custodian Andrew Gibson in the third minute. The KSAFA team, however, quickly climbed out of the tiny hole that they had dug themselves, when a corner from midfielder Dwayne Williams flew over the head of flapping Rivoli custodian Shannon Bartley and into the back of the net.
Dwayne Smith headed Mead-haven into the lead from another corner in the 18th minute and Leighton Neita fired into an empty net after a well weighted square from the left flank had left keeper Bartley stranded on the stroke of half-time.
Patrick Beech scored a penalty for Rivoli in the 76th minute.
Meadhaven coach Lijyasu Simms commended his team for a hard-fought victory.
"They did well. Congratulations to the players. Every point is crucial in this competition and we will continue to go for three points all the time," he said.
"This was a tough game, but we stuck to the task and really showed what they were made of after going a goal behind," he added.
            Recovery possible

While disappointed with the result, Rivoli coach Jermaine Thomas believes his team will recover from what he termed a minor setback.
"It's minor. It's not really a big setback, when you see us again we won't be the same team," he said.
"We really gave away two soft goals from defensive lapses and we really just lost the game from there."
