Soccer-Mexico to start World Cup qualifiers with interim coach
MEXICO CITY, April 24 (Reuters) - Mexico will start their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign under interim coach Jesus Ramirez, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) said Thursday.
Ramirez, coach of the Mexican team which won the under-17 world championship in 2005, has taken over on a caretaker basis following the sacking of Hugo Sanchez last month.
"Jesus Ramirez will coach the team for the warm-up games against Argentina and Peru (in June), as well as the matches in the second preliminary round of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers for South Africa 2010," said the FMF in a statement.
Mexico face Belize over two legs in June and will play the away leg in Houston as the Central Americans do not have a stadium which meets FIFA requirements.
Two of the favourites to take over on a long-term basis, Javier Aguirre and Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari, are currently under contract with Atletico Madrid and Portugal respectively.
Sanchez was fired after the under-23 team, which he also coached, failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics. The former Real Madrid striker, regarded as the finest player Mexico has produced, had been at the helm for only 16 months.
Ramirez's first game in charge was a friendly against China last week. Mexico won 1-0.Winning means you're willing to go longer, work harder, and give more than anyone else - Vince Lombardi
