GEORGE Vernal's second half brace carried Boys' Town to a surprise 2-1 win over second-placed Tivoli Gardens at the Edward Seaga Complex in the Cash Plus Premier League yesterday.
Having soaked up some immense pressure in the first half, which saw the home team creating six clear scoring chances to their hosts' two, Boy's Town took the lead in the 51st minute from a dead ball situation.
Tivoli custodian, Edsel Scott, had no chance to effect the save as Vernal rocketed his 20-yard free-kick into the far corner.
With the Red Brigade spectators still celebrating their 25th goal of the season, Vernal netted his second of the game and fourth of the season.
The midfielder pounced on Scott's poor clearance from Michael Campbell's left sided free-kick, and fired home his shot which bounced off Tivoli's central defender Kasai Hinds, who failed to clear the ball of the goal-line. Kevin Blackford netted Tivoli's consolation in the 64th minute from 12 yards, after substitute Navion Boyd found him with an accurate pass.
With only two regular season and five play-off games remaining in the league, Boys' Town with 47 points, closed the gap on second-placed Tivoli (56) to nine points.
Leaders Portmore United started yesterday with 57 points ahead of their late match with Harbour View. Boys' Town coach Andrew Price was elated with his first win at Tivoli since returning to the league two seasons ago.
"I told my team we needed to create some history if we intended to challenge for the premier league title," he said. "The mathematics is very simple, we have to win all our remaining games and we are going to treat each game from now on as a cup final," Price added.
Tivoli manager Brian Rose admitted that the defeat dealt his team's title hopes a little blow, but insisted that they were not giving up.
"Well there is still seven game to go and we are not letting up... we are going to remain focus and continue our programme to get maximum three points from our games to come," Rose said.
In other results, visitors Seba United held relegation strugglers Arnett Gardens to a 1-1 draw at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, St George's and Waterhouse shared two goals at Drewsland; Village held Sporting Central to a 0-0 tie at Brancourt; while Reno and August Town played to a 2-2 stalemate at STETHS.
