Harbor View vs. D.C. United
Harbor View Stadium, Kingston, Jamaica
In front of half-empty stands in Kingston, Jamaica, D.C. United and Harbor View played to a 1-1 tie in the first leg of the Champions Cup quarterfinals.
It was a rematch of the 2005 quarterfinal match-up, won 4-2 by D.C. on aggregate. United scored on a Devon McTavish strike in first-half injury time, but Harbor View equalized when substitute Lovell Palmer rammed home a scramble off a corner kick five minutes from time.
For the MLS side, the match was the debut of its raft of offseason acquisitions, including Marcelo Gallardo, Gonzalo Martinez, Gonzalo Peralta, and Zach Wells. The players’ unfamiliarity with each other showed in the opening moments, although the club settled down and controlled a disjointed first half hour.
Jamie Moreno came off in the 17th minute after injuring his hamstring, with Franco Niell taking his place. The Argentinean almost immediately made an impact, as Jermaine Taylor saw yellow after pulling him down six minutes later. Gallardo's subsequent free kick forced a diving save by Dwayne Miller.
As the half wore on, Harbor View, in midseason form, began to assert itself. However, poor touches and poorly struck shots betrayed the Jamaican side. In the 33rd minute, the its central midfielder, Richard Edwards, earned himself a yellow card for a vicious tackle on Fred.
D.C. drew first blood, somewhat against the run of play, when Gallardo's shot from just outside the 18-yard box hit McTavish in the back of the leg. The ball fortuitously fell at his feet and he slotted it past a helpless Miller for his first goal as a member of the Black and Red.
The second half began as sloppily as the first, with half-chances for both sides but no real scoring threats. In the 70th minute, View's Palmer replaced Kemeel Wolfe, while Keith Kelly subbed in for an injured Edwards.
As D.C. began to tire, Harbor View began to dominate. The team had its best chance of the match in the 73rd minute, but a low cross glanced off Rafeik Thomas' sliding foot. A Palmer shot in the 78th minute went just wide of goal.
The Jamaican team continued to apply pressure, and it paid off in the 85th minute. After a low shot forced Wells to concede a corner, Palmer equalized, scoring after the ball bounced off multiple attackers and defenders.
The second leg will be played in Washington D.C. next Tuesday.
