Stubborn Boyz score second win on tour
Sean Williams with the Reggae Boyz in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
    Wednesday, March 12, 2008

ACURITIBA, Brazil - Hamstrung by fatigue brought on by the rigours of their three-week tour, the Reggae Boyz demonstrated guts to rally for victory against state Division One outfit, Parana Club, 3-2, at the Estadio Municipal dos Pinhao here yesterday.

Newton Sterling fired the local-based side into the lead in only the sixth-minute, but his celebration was short-lived as he was rushed to hospital after complaining of back pains following a push in the back as he challenged a defender for a high ball.

Team doctor Garfield Campbell said Sterling had complained of back pains and was carried by ambulance to a nearby hospital for x-rays.

Other scorers for Jamaica were captain Rudolph Austin (80th minute penalty) and Eric Vernon in the 90th. Kleber in the 35th minute and Emerson in the 78th got on the scoresheet for Parana Club.

Jamaica, in their fifth game of their seven-match tour of Brazil, played nothing near their polished rendition on Sunday against Operario FEC which ended 1-1, but demonstrated grit in the last quarter of the game to snatch the win - their second so far.

Technical director Reno Simoes said the players were suffering from mental fatigue, but credited them for a fair job in salvaging a late win.
"Today (yesterday) is the 11th of March and they (Boyz) arrived here on the 29th of February, so in 11 days they have played five games, and we have travelled around, plus we played on Sunday and today (yesterday) so they are tired.

"I told them that they will have to learn to deal with this tiredness as this what you get when you aim to play at higher level; that's the professional life," said Simoes.

The Brazilian said mentally the Boyz's minds are back in Jamaica as their anxiety levels are up as the tour nears its end.

"The second point that we have to realise is that we're near the end of the tour and now the mind of everybody is back in Jamaica and that has changed the focus a little bit. but I think it was good as they came from behind to tie the game and went on to win," Simoes said.

Jamaica's opening goal came when right-back Desmond Breakenridge passed quickly to Sterling, who turned his marker, Diago, to bury a low shot from 18 yards with his favourite left foot.

Parana levelled the score when Kleber unleashed a feeble right-footed drive from the edge of the goal area that eluded a web of Jamaican feet and unbelievably slipped beneath Allien Whittaker in goal.

The Brazilians went ahead when Elvis, the architect of their first goal, produced another piece of brilliance when he steered a teasing low ball across the goal for Emerson to tap home unmarked in the box.

But in a late burst after a swath of substitutions, the Jamaicans decided to rescue the game with a late flurry of attack, spearheaded by the outstanding Austin.

And it was the Portmore United player who stepped up to bury a penalty after a goal-bound James Thomas was chopped down in the area.

With the scores even and the clock winding down, Jamaica snatched the late victory when Thomas laid off a delicate pass to his right for the nippy Vernon- his National Under-20 and Portmore teammate - to run onto, and the diminutive player finished off with a powerfully-struck right-footer that gave Parana goalie, Alex, no chance.

Jamaica will next face the B team of top league contenders, Atletico Paranaense, tomorrow.
