St Catherine High shows off the 'art of the drum'

    Saturday, February 23, 2008

The drummers from the St Catherine High School proved their greater dexterity and creativity as they beat out all contenders and took the title, Best Overall Performance at the second staging of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission's Drumfest. The energetic drummers also captured the title Most Outstanding Group in the senior category.

The event, dubbed The Art of the Drum, had Emancipation Park pulsating on Thursday, with rhythms of the Congo and other drums, as students as young as five years old, displayed dominance and mastery over their instruments.
Inaugural Champions, Innswood High School, were also impressive.
With a mandate to unearth talent, the competition's organisers wanted to provide an avenue for players of hand- beaten drums to compete in a formal environment. "If you have a heart beat, you have rhythm and these students have exceeded themselves.
Many of them, with further training, could go on to do this thing professionally," stated an ecstatic Ouida Lewis, master drummer and judge of the competition.
A commanding drum call from the Akwaaba Drummers, opened the evening's proceedings and signalled the beginning of what proved to be fierce competition among schools and groups across the island.
Interspersed between performances by the almost 40 finalists, were guest appearances by the Nomaddz, dub poetry group and an earthshaking and energetic performance by the L'Acadco drummers and dancers who delivered a piece entitled Amathagazelo.

This is one of the most positive developments I have seen in Jakan culture in the last 20, no make that 30 years.

I never fully really realised how much Jamaiaca had given up traditional style music forms throughout the culture due to the phenomenal rise of ska, rocksteady and reggae until I came to New York in the mid 80's and went to many Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Columbian parties where drums and other more traditional instruments were used for pretty much the whole party.

I actually felt a little jealous that they seemed closer to the real West African roots music that I had ever seen in Jamaica except at festival time.

It is really amazing to see this develop in Jamaica at this time, especially with the predominant foreign media culture mindset which has enveloped the island, especially since the mid 80's.

I wholeheartedly congaratulate the people who organized this competion and hope that it becomes an event in the future that is only surpassed in terms of school participation by Boys and Girls Althletic championship.

I wonder if they also have Dink Mini and Kumina division, that would be really something else and based on that picture above the youth them look like them really enjoying it.

A wonder how St Catherine win that competition, the St Thomas and Portland school them must be never participate.

Well it's very interesting; how we are busy
questioning the JFF actions in taking our boys to BRASIL (yes Brasil) to learn the game of FOOTBALL. On the other hand we cannot organize a good cheering team for our qualifying games.

We need Drummers and a Marching band. We now know that there are many drumming groups in JA. What are we going to do about it?
