The Minnesota Thunder announced today the signing of Jamaican native, Stephen deRoux, pending USSF approval, and New Zealand International, Andrew Barron, pending USSF approval and international clearance.
Deroux has spent the last three seasons with DC United of Major League Soccer while Barron has played for Team Wellington and Canterbury United of the New Zealand Football Championship.
The Jamaican born deRoux has spent the last three seasons with DC United where he played in ten games logging 343 minutes. His first MLS start came on September 9, 2006 against Real Salt Lake where he played the full 90 minutes.
“Steve gives us a lot of speed, a ton of athleticism and a very good left foot,” said Thunder head coach Amos Magee. “His versatility will give us a bunch of options as we continue to improve our team. We expect Steve will be an impact player in our league.”
deRoux spent his college soccer career at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland where he was named to the Division III Junior College First Team and All-Mid East. He was also named a NSCAA Second Team All-American in 2002. He signed a development contract with DC United in 2005 following his college career.
deroux has signed a one year contract with a one-year option.
Barron brings international experience to the Thunder for 2008. The 27-year old midfielder has earned eight caps with the New Zealand National Team including one goal against Malaysia. Barron most recently was on trial with Luton Town of England’s League One.
“Andy is a box to box midfielder who will increase our athleticism and toughness,” said Magee. “I’ve kept close tabs on him for the past couple of years and feel that with his work rate and his ability to strike the ball, he will score some big goals in the USL First Division.”
Barron played at William Carey University from 2000-2004 where he finished as their second all-time leading scorer with 52 goals. He was nominated a 2003 All-American. He most recently played professionally with Canterbury United and Team Wellington of the New Zealand Football Championship.
Barron has signed a one year contract with a two-year option.
