  • The 4-5-1 lineup

The 4-5-1 lineup is usually used later in a game, when a lead or a tie need to be saved over time.
Here are some details about the positions:
Sweeper (SW) The sweeper should be a leader on the field. Controls the defense, always staying behind the fullbacks.
Stopper (ST) Responsible for marking (or covering) the center forward or center midfielder of the other team. Also has an important offensive part of distributing the ball to the midfielders
Left/Right Backs (LB/RB) Mark the opponent's forwards and are the only real defenders. These players have to be dependable and willing to give up any kind of offensive play.
Left/Right Defenders (LD/RD) Mark the opponent's forwards. More advanced teams these players are used to carry the ball up the outside with the mid-fielders, allowing more effective crossing.
Left/Right Midfielders(LM/RM) With the 4-5-1, outside midfielders need to take charge and demand the ball more than usual. With only one forward, offensive plays have to be played over the outsides, since a 5 man midfield can hardly push up fast enough to support the single forward.
Center Midfielders (LC/CM/RC) Even though offensive plays should be played over the outsides, quick passes through the middle can be an effective tool. If at least two of the center midfielders are fast enough to perform a counter-attack, they can easily involve the forward into this play and either win time or go for the goal.
Forward (F1) The single forward will have to cope with a game with few chances to score, since this formation is usually used to hold the ball and win where offense is ranked only second. The forward will also have to fight for every ball in the offense and do a lot of running. A substitute should be brought into the game should the 4-5-1 be performed over a longer period of time.

    4-5-1 Formation

    SoccerManager.com 4-5-1 Formation
Traditionally favoured by European teams, the 4-5-1 formation is becoming ever more popular in the Premiership.
The 4-5-1 formation that is four defenders, five midfielders and one striker - is often seen in European games where teams face a tough away fixture and the manager chooses to pack the midfield.
It can be very effective, particularly at keeping possession, and with five midfielders covering the defence it provides a solid base.
Sometimes you will see 10 men behind the ball. But it also means that attacking options are limited.
The poor old striker often has a lone battle up front.
It works best with a big, strong front man, such as Chelsea's Didier Drogba, who can win the ball in the air and hold it up until support arrives.
Otherwise it can produce relatively few goal-scoring chances.
This system has a lot in common with the 4-3-3 formation, where the wide midfielders join the lone striker.
Jose Mourinho uses this particularly well at Chelsea.
Put simply, they play 4-3-3 when they have the ball and 4-5-1 when they d

      4-4-2 Formation

The famous 4-4-2 formation is the most widely used in football. In the 1950’s it replaced the outdated ‘WM’ formation that was widely used before hand. It is perhaps the most balanced formation and that is why it is the most famous tactic in football History.
      Different Parts of Field

      SoccerManager.com 4-4-2 Formation
The four-four-two system is split into three sections, with two full-backs and two central defenders forming a solid defensive base, and four midfield players supporting a pair of strikers.
      Defensive Third

The back four often use the offside trap made famous by George Graham's Arsenal of the 1980's and 1990's where they mastered the art of the defending and new that if they scored a goal, more often than not they would win the game. The two central defenders are expected to defend first and foremost, allowing the full-backs on either side to get forward when the opportunity arises.
      Middle Third

With your two wide men providing the width, it is up to the two central midfielders to decide when it is there job to support the atackers. Some coaches, however prefer to have a midfield player who acts as a defensive shield infront of the back four, known as the 'holding role', allowing the other central midfield player to get forward and support the forwards at every available opportunity.
      Attacking Third

The attacking third consists of two strikers, who attempt to get on the end of wingers crosses, or run on to midfield players through balls and attempt to find the back of the net. It is also the job of a forward to hold the ball up, allowing the midfielders to support them.
Teams that have successfully adapted it

Four - Four - Two is the longest established formation and this is because of the success of sides who have used the formation in the past. Offering strength through the centre and genuine width, it is no surprise that coaches continue to set their teams out in this formation.
Manchester United 1999 Treble Winning side

One of the most successful exponents of the 4-4-2 football formation in recent years was the Manchester United treble winning side of 1999. With Giggs and Beckham providing the width, and Roy Keane and Paul Scholes pulling the strings in the centre of the midfield, United were a joy to watch, providing their strikers with lots of goal scoring opportunities. In recent years however many sides have decided to play with an extra midfield player, leading to many observers believing the game is becoming more defensive and unattractive.
      Attractive Attacking Football By Arsenal

The 4-4-2 formation can either be used by a team that play an attractive and attacking passing style with plenty of freedom to interchange positions such as Arsenal or for more workmanlike sides with less talent such as Sunderland. It is no surprise that the most successful sides in English football - Liverpool in the 1970’s and 1980‘s, Manchester United and Arsenal in the 1990’s use the 4-4-2 formation.
The Old Lady of Turin Juventus

Although often considered a formation solely used by British sides, the current Juventus team that last season won Serie A and are one of the favorites to win the Champions League this season use the 4-4-2 formation. Their midfield quartet of Camoranesi, Vieira, Emerson and Nedved is considered by many to be the strongest in Europe today.

        4-3-3 Formation

        SoccerManager.com 4-3-3 Formation

The 4-3-3 formation was a development of the 4-2-4, and was played globally by the Brazilian national team in the 1962 World Cup. The extra player in midfield allowed a stonger defence, and the midfield could be staggered for different effects. The three midfielders normally play closely together to protect the defense, and move laterally across the field as a coordinated unit. The three forwards split across the field to spread the attack, and are expected to "tackle back". Few teams often start a game in this formation, but may change to it late in a game if a goal is needed.
The 4-3-3 system allows you to have three attackers while still having a strong midfield.
A staggered 4-3-3 involving a defensive midfielder (usually numbered 4, 5 or 6) and two attacking midfielders (numbered 8 and 10) was commonplace in Italy, Argentina and Uruguay during the 1960s and 1970s. The Italian variety of 4-3-3 was simply a modification of WM, by converting one of the two wing-halves to a libero (sweeper), whereas the Argentine and Uruguayan formations were derived from 2-3-5 and retained the notional attacking centre-half

                  4-5-1 for Jamaicas campaign

Jamaica has two players who can play as a striker in that position, Bennet or Lowe.the supporting attacking midfielder has to be quick and a creator of the ball to play that counter attacking role , here again Bennet,Hue or King could be employed

So my forward line would be , Bennett as my sole forward with King as my attacking midfield to play directly behind Bennett.

                  ................................Bennet(FW)........ .......................

                  ...................................King(attacking MD).................

                  Tommorrow the midfield.

                    In a 4-5-1

The lone striker would have to be King or Shelton. King as the first choice as he is our best finisher and has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Shelton would also cause problems because of his speed and dribbling skills. Bennet would be my 4th choice after Fuller. My first choice at attacking mid would have to be Ricardo Fuller as he is quite simply the most creative player we have. Tell him his role and expectation and let him roam. Next in line would be JJ, Damien Francis, Hue, Fraser, Dane Richards etc not in any particular order. And yes I said JJ as he is becoming a more complete player; he has improved all facets of his game at Sheff. Wed. Francis is a two way mid that loves to attack...What more can be said of Hue. If he is fit and inform it would be hard to keep him off the field.
