Potters stun Iron to go top
Stoke come from behind to see off Scunthorpe
Lawrence: At the double for Stoke
Stoke mounted a superb fightback to beat Scunthorpe 3-2 and climb to the top of the Championship table.
Scunthorpe, at the foot of the division and with just one win in their last eight games, looked like upsetting the form book as they raced into a 2-0 lead at the break.
Martin Paterson opened the scoring against his former club as he latched onto Matthew Sparrow's clever pass and guided a volley past Steve Simonsen after seven minutes.
Jack Hobbs added a second for Scunthorpe in the 23rd minute with a powerful header from Ian Morris' corner, before Stoke clicked into gear.
Joe Murphy denied Leon Cort before half-time but there was no stopping Stoke after the interval as a long throw from Andy Griffin found its way to Liam Lawrence and he finished expertly from a tight angle.
Ricardo Fuller thought he had equalised moments later when he headed the ball home, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
The Potters did not have to wait long to draw level as substitute Richard Cresswell controlled a Lawrence cross and drilled a shot beyond Murphy on 63 minutes.
Lawrence then made it 3-2 with a simple finish in the 67th minute after a fine run down the left by Fuller.
Scunthorpe battled hard to get back in the game but Stoke clung on to move ahead of both Watford and Bristol City.
