  • VENUE UPGRADE (Frome Sports Complex)

    Frome to host international matches?

    by Delly's
From all reports, the Frome Sports Complex is in a state of complete ruin; but take a real hard look at the level of work on the facility and you will be surprised to know your beloved Reno F.C. will soon parade their skills on home soil once more, and perhaps be the host of international matches in the future.

So says Reno’s Technical Director, Wendell Downswell in an exclusive interview with the Western News on Monday.

“When the work is done, not only will we have a better playing surface, a top class irrigation system and better lighting but we hope to have international matches at Frome, because the facility will be so positioned to do so,” Downswell said.

Presently playing home matches over in neighboring St. Elizabeth at the STETHS ground, the former two times champions are chomping at the bit in great anticipation of once again playing at their perennial home ground at Frome in Westmoreland, and the wait should not be very long.

A visit to Frome last week, revealed workmen hard at work laying a complex network of irrigation pipes for the entire playing surface, under the watchful eyes of a Frome Sugar Company Manager.

The surface had previously been cleared of top soil and grass and a new layer replaced it under which the irrigation pipes were laid.

“Having visited the complex recently I must say that I am extremely impressed at what I saw there on the whole laying out process. We believe it will be one of the better playing surfaces in the league when the work is done,” Reno’s Technical Director, Wendell Downswell said.

Apart from the resurfacing of the ground, plans are also being advanced on the overall upgrade of the complex, which last hosted a premier league match last year.

This level of work will be the basis on which the Frome complex will be positioned to host international matches, as the size of the field has been reconfigured to international standard, according to Downswell.
“Work on the complex is ongoing, but at the end of it we are expecting a top class venue for football, with a proper irrigation system, great playing surface and up to date lighting that will only auger well for Reno football and the fans at Frome,” Downswell said.

The system,is a copy of the system used in irrigation of Frome’s vast sugar cane lands, which gives an even distribution of water per acre.

Repair work on the complex was scheduled to be completed last year, but the continuous heavy rains in September and October, has resulted in a revision of the completion date, which is now tentatively set according to Downswell, for around March of this year.
