  • Catherine Hall Stadium on track for september

    by Craig Oates
The opening of the much-awaited Catherine Hall Stadium is expected to be fully functional by September of this year.

Trevor Heavens, Project Manager of the Urban Development Corporation, disclosed this last week. Mr. Heavens was speaking at the launch of the Milo Western Relays held at Hotel Grandiosa in Montego Bay. “The complex will be finished by September this year and will have two stands, the grand stand and another smaller one. When completed it should be able to hold up to 7500 patrons,” he stated. Heavens went on to say that the main stadium will be fenced of separately and some parts will have the facilities similar to those, which exist, at the National Stadium.
“We will have facilities such as bathrooms, changing rooms, tennis courts, basketball courts and netball courts,” he added.

He also reported to the gathering which included media practitioners, administrators and athletes that efforts will be made to start another phase to get something like an indoor facility which would mirror that of the National Arena. Veteran journalist of “The Gleaner Company” Adrian Frater posed a question to him about the inadequacy of seating arrangements. To this he said, “After the facility is completed it will be handed over to a management committee whose job it will be to make it financially viable.”

It makes no sense having a stadium with thirty thousand seats but not financially viable. It remains to be seen if the completion date will be met in September but in the meantime Western Jamaica waits patiently.
