    Digicel Cup coming to Jamaica

    Nodley Wright, Freelance Writer

"It is like Christmas has come all over again. Santa has come," said Dwight Jeremiah summing up the feeling of the Trelawny Football Association in his vote of thanks at the National Rums of Jamaica Major League football launch.

Jeremiah was speaking in response to the number of gifts in promises brought by president of the Jamaica Football Federation Captain Horace Burrell, the guest speaker at the launch held at the Trelawny Fire Station hospitality room.

"Just before Christmas we made a strong bid to host the Digicel Caribbean Cup and Jamaica have been granted hosting rights. Our intention is to have one zone in Western Jamaica," Burrell told the responsive audience before stating that there was a strong possibility that the matches will be played at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium.

"I mentioned to them (the Caribbean Football Union) that the (Jamaican) government had expended a large sum of money on the venue.

"It is ours and we must make use of it. We will make use of it," he added before indicating that discussions had already begun with the Minister of Sports with a view to securing the venue, which was built for the 2007 Cricket World Cup hosted in the Caribbean. The venue has been scarcely used since.

Already he said the response has been favourable.
"I have had dialogue with Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, Minister of Sport and the Government is very receptive to the fraternity making use of it. Naturally we will have further negotiations," Burrell told the captive audience which punctuated his presentation with applause.

It was not just the Digicel Caribbean Cup that Burrell had in store for Trelawny and Western Jamaica.

"There are several internationals to be played in Jamaica and I will ensure that Western Jamaica gets a slice of the cake. "In fact Simoes has a plan to play 15 friendlies this year and you are certain to be in for some of that," he added.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

Keep in mind that there are more Reggae Boyz playing overseas than in 1994.
