Marlon King's proposed £5m move from Watford to Fulham was thrown into doubt last night, as complications emerged from his medical. Fulham's doctors were not satisfied with the condition of the striker's right knee, which he injured last season and that kept him out for six months.
Roy Hodgson, the manager, did complete the signing of the central defender Brede Hangeland from FC Copenhagen while the club face a work-permit hearing next week for another of their targets, the American international striker Eddie Johnson. Hodgson has also made moves for Leon Andreasen, the holding midfielder from Werder Bremen, and Guglielmo Stendardo, the Lazio defender.
David Moyes has taken leave of his natural caution to predict Everton can finish above Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester City in the pursuit of the fourth Champions League spot. The Everton manager, whose side are tied on 39 points with those three clubs, believes his squad have the strength in depth and the consistency to beat their Merseyside rivals to a top-four finish for the second time in four seasons.
"I honestly believe we are in the best position to go on from here," said Moyes. "Why? Because we are playing well, and we have been playing well consistently for months. Our form has been good over a long period, not just four or five matches, and we have shown the right sort of form for a long time now."
