Refs to pay $1,500 fee
In a move to establish a more professional body, the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) will require all referees to be licensed.
This Saturday, the JFF will facilitate the registration at its New Kingston office. The referees will be required to pay an annual fee of $1,500.
"We are looking to certify about 400 referees and each parish association will be responsible for the referees' group in that parish," said Peter Prendergast, chairman of the Referees Committee, following Friday's board meeting.
The former FIFA referee added that there is currently a shortage of officials and that the committee will be targeting young persons to join the core.
"We'll be targeting youths 16, 17 years old and we'll be seeking a sponsor for our national school training programme," he pointed out.
The JFF has decided to take a proactive approach to attracting referees as persons are often deterred due to the verbal abuse meted out to the officials and the difficulty in them getting paid at times.
Just over a month ago an official was struck with a bottle by a fan during a KSAFA Major League game hosted by Elleston Flats.
