Lehmann Confident He Can Be Arsenal's Nunber One Again
Displaced Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann believes he can win back his place as the Gunners' number one, even though manager Arsene Wenger currently prefers Spanish keeper Manuel Almunia.
Spending most of the first half of the season on Arsenal's bench has not dented the self-confidence of maverick goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, 38.
"I still believe I will return to the Arsenal goal as the first-choice," Lehmann told Thursday's Hamburger Abendblatt.
"At the end, the higher quality will always rise to the top."
Lehmann revealed that he had had a frank discussion with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger about the situation.
"I told him I get the impression Almunia and I are not being judged by the same criteria, which is keeping me on the bench," said Lehmann.
"We need to speak again at the end of December to look at the situation. We will see then how the situation changes."
Since losing his place in the Arsenal first-team last August - ostensibly because of injury, but in the wake of high-profile clangers, both of which led directly to goals being conceded in the Gunners' first two League matches of the season - he has made just one appearance. That was for Arsenal in their last Champions League game, against Steaua Bucharest.
Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg wanted Lehmann, but insists he wants to stay at Arsenal until his contract expires in June.
Meanwhile, Germany's coach, Joachim Loew, has this week confirmed that Lehmann will be his first-choice goalkeeper at the Euro 2008 finals next June.
