KSAFA boss lashes attack on referee

President of the Kingston & St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA), Ambassador Stewart Stephenson, has condemned last Saturday's attack on referee Shane Harrison during a Super League match between Elletson Flats and Constant Spring at the UWI Bowl.

Harrison was subsequently hospitalised and underwent surgery yesterday after he was hit on the left side of his face by an object hurled by his attacker.

Immediately after the assault, Harrison was rushed to the UWI Hospital. He initially received five stitches to the left side of his upper lip and was released.

But the swelling to his face was persistent and the pain became more severe, resulting in him returning to the dentist, who in turn immediately referred him to an oral surgeon, who discovered that there was a maxillary fracture which required surgery.

"This is an act of hooliganism which everybody condemns," an upset Stephenson told the Observer yesterday.
"Jamaica is a violent country and these criminal acts are too many and unfortunately," he added.

Ambassador Stephenson sought to point out that the proper security measures were not put in place by Elletson Flats, the host team. He said the KSAFA Disciplinary Committee at press time was still locked in a meeting to decide on the appropiate punishment for Elletson Flats.
"Unfortunately, the guidelines were not followed (by Elleston Flats) and regrettably a hooligan has impacted on the competition," he noted.

Meanwhile, general secretary of the Jamaica Football Referees Association (JFRA), Margaret Sutherland, said Harrison underwent surgery yesterday with the assistance of the KSAFA executive which donated $100,000 towards the operation. She said the surgery cost $160,000.
"But to date, we have spent close to $200,000. The surgery was done and Harrison is now at home trying to get some rest," she said.

Sutherland said members of KSAFA Referees Group on Tuesday expressed an unwillingness to resume officiating in KSAFA competitions.
"Referees islandwide are sympathising... but we've not gotten any word from the other parishes...," she said.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
