Red Bulls Closing In on New Coach

    By Jack Bell

Nothing is set, but the Red Bulls moved a step closer to hiring a new coach when Juan Carlos Osorio, the favored replacement for Bruce Arena, resigned as coach of the Chicago Fire.
Only two weeks ago, the Fire were considering filing tampering charges with Major League Soccer after the Red Bulls’ managing director, Marc de Grandpre, said the club would be interested in hiring Osorio. A native of Colombia who has coached in M.L.S. and the English Premier League, Osorio took over in Chicago last summer and led the Fire to the Eastern Conference final.
Several weeks ago, Chicago General Manager John Guppy, in a telephone interview, said that Osorio had signed a long-term contract with the club and would be going no where. Monday, however, Guppy told The Associated Press that “despite the Fire’s best efforts to keep Juan in Chicago, he determined that he needed to leave Chicago for family and personal reasons.” It is believed that Osorio’s wife did not like living in the Chicago area.
Red Bulls officials could not be reached for comment, although Andy McGowan, a team spokesman, earlier said that the Red Bulls had been granted permission to speak with Osorio.
Red Bulls officials have said they would spare no expense and agree to any reasonable compensation (cash and probably draft choices) to entice Osorio back to New Jersey, where he was an assistant with the MetroStars in 2001.
[Update: Tuesday morning, the N.Y. Daily News reported this on its Web site.]
Osorio talked to The New York Times last month and a transcript of that conversation is available here on Goal.
Before taking the job with the Fire, Osorio was an assistant coach with Manchester City in England. He would become the 11th coach in the 12-year history of the club and the fifth

hehehe ... WHAT? After seeing him coach in the 2nd game versus DC .. I'm still trying to figure out why the commentators kept calling him a coaching genius.

It's an interesting choice and he did take a average team and make them good but I read some of the comments on the NY Times web site and people are saying he is just another Bruce Arena who likes ready made players. Supposidly he is not good at developing young talent so how Dane Richards will succed under him is a question.

I like his name though, very sexy, I could see myself trying to pick up a woman in a bar with it.

Lazie I will kill you and Scaly! Keep talking!

To be honest he will just be another in a long line of coaches that the Red Bulls have destroyed. Don't you guys get it? NY/NJ sucks. Nothing good comes from unno. I wish we could wall you guys off the same way HL walled off Old Jamaica. Just watch and you will see that Juan will come in like a genius and leave like all the other high profile red bull coaches before him........a broken man. Your franchise is a black hole.

Thank god for a great club like DC United. We just win baby! - T.K.

I'll leave that up to Maudib and his friends.

              The Red Bulls Management

appears out of sort like the NY Knicks..Why would they give up anything for this coach is beyond me. TK is it so bad that a good coach is not available on the free.

I agree with you 100% Scaly. I am just bitter that you guys are picking that fool fool coach from that fool fool team that had a buck up win against us in the fool fool play offs. That's why I am dissing his name.

Gotta love the MILFS and COUGARS though. Ah the life of a youth soccer coach. I would explain more but I am sure I would just incriminate myself. - T.K.

To be honest the NY franchise has been a disaster from jump street. It is really going to take a task master to right the ship. If Osorio is that man than they should probably forfeit some treasure for him. They have chewed up and spit out their fair share of coaches over the years so he would be taking a big gamble coming there. Fortune favors the bold I guess. I think with the Red Bulls getting their own stadium and complex they are in good shape to really step up their profile in the region. He might just be catching the wave at the right time.

Oh yeah did I mention death to the Red Cows yet? - T.K.
