    Hard as a Rock

On March 1, 2007 Linval Dixon became the new head coach at Premier League club, Portmore United, following the sudden resignation of Paul Young.
To many the news came as a surprise, but those in the ‘know’ knew that Dixon’s appointment came a matter of him working through the ranks when he began his coaching career at Portmore United in 2004.

Dixon, 34 was one of the key figures in Jamaica’s successful World Cup appearance in 1998 in France. A solid central defender at the heart of the Reggae Boyz’s defence, Dixon closed his international career with 151 caps between 1991 and 2003.

With his wealth of experience, he was able to connect and transfer such priceless knowledge to the younger generation. And by 2005 he was named head coach of the club’s under-21 unit, before becoming Young’s assistant a year later.

During his brief stint with the youth team, Portmore successfully defended the national Under-21 title with Dixon, who received much of the credit. Similarly when he took over mid-way the 2006/07 season, Dixon was identified as one of the central pillars behind the team finishing as runners-up to champions, Harbour View FC and automatically qualified for the Caribbean Club Championships.

In his younger years, not many people knew about the little teenager from Old Harbour Bay who attended Old Harbour Secondary (now Old Harbour High). But as soon as the talented lad was snapped up by Clarendon College in the mid 80s he blossomed into a household name.

Dixon then went to Hazard Football Club – now known today as Portmore United – where he helped them to the lift the 1992/93 premiership crown.
He would later Dixon signed up with USA 'A' League club, Charleston Battery, where he had two stints in 1995 and 2002.
Like in his playing days Dixon’s rate of success is greater than his failures so far as a coach. And one does hope that that trend will continue in the foreseeable future for Linval ‘Rudi’ Dixon.
