JFF to declare Simoes as new TD today
Tuesday, December 04, 2007
The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), through its president Captain Horace Burrell, will host a press conference today at 3:00 pm at the Federation's offices at 20 St Lucia Crescent, where it is expected that former technical director Rene Simoes will be officially declared as the man back in charge of the national football programme.
In recent times, Simoes, who was in charge of the programme when the Reggae Boyz became the first English-speaking Caribbean nation to qualify for the France 1998 World Cup Finals, has declared in his native Brazil that he was set to return to Jamaica in the new year.
A Brazilian website reported that Simoes had chosen Jamaica over other offers because of the "good relationship" that exists between himself and the country. The little Brazilian successfully led Serie B club Coritiba to the divisional honours and automatic promotion to the Series A.
Last week, Captain Burrell, while in South Africa for the FIFA 2010 World Cup preliminary draw, said he would not divulge any details of Simoes' return until he returned to the island and met with the relative authorities.
"In the new dispensation, all protocols will be observed and one is to first meet with the board of directors to give a full appraisal of the situation; Secondly, with the government (Sport Minister Olivia 'Babsy' Grange), and thirdly, our private sector partners, who have been supporting the programme so well," Captain Burrell told the Observer.
Simoes took charge of Jamaica in October 1994 and guided the team to the World Cup Finals at the senior level, the Under-17s and the Under-20s. He left the job nearly six years later, in early 2000, after a wretched last two years in charge of the seniors, including embarrassing 0-9, 0-6 and 0-4 drubbings away to Costa Rica, Norway and Saudi Arabia (in California, USA), respectively.
