German football must step up racism fight says Zwanziger

BERLIN (AFP) - Theo Zwanziger, president of the German Football Federation (DFB), says it is vital to crack down on racism in German football after recent incidents.
"Either we tackle the issue head on or not. It is a minority of people who are bringing the game down," Zwanziger said in Bild am Sonntag.
"Racism is a poison and we need to distance ourselves from it. We cannot give these people a platform. I know the true fans love their players whatever their skin colour of nationality."

The DFB has requested a record total of 100,000 euros (128,000 dollars) of fines be handed out to two teams whose fans racially abused rival players.
Alemannia Aachen face a 75,000 euro fine after their home supporters targeted Borussia Monchengladbach's Brazilian forward Kahe.
Gladbach's fans responded by offering racist remarks to Aachen's Malian defender Moses Sichone and face a 25,000 euro penalty.
Last week Hansa Rostock were fined 20,000 euros after supporters from their reserve team abused Schalke 04's Ghana-born German international Gerald Asamoah during a cup match.
