SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Tenman Reno scored a controversial 1-0 win over August Town at the St Elizabeth Technical grounds in Santa Cruz yesterday as the Cash Plus Premier League continued.
Tempers flared and the game was held up for about 10 minutes in the second half as members of the August Town team, including officials protested the awarding of the goal in the 70th minute.
Ricardo Scott's powerful shot from just outside the six-yard box on the right side appeared to beat goalkeeper Devon Haughton's outstretched hands into the goal.
The team, however, protested the goal, indicating it had passed on the outside of the post and through a hole in the net and asked that it be disallowed.
Television replays showed that the August Town players were correct, but referee Garnett Page and assistant Malachi Brown stood by their decision much to the anger of the Kingston-based team.
FIFA rules do not allow for the use of replay technology in official games.
August Town's coach, Calvert Fitzgerald, was sent off during the hold up, but returned after the game to continue his protestations as the officials were escorted off the field by police officers.
