Girlz face Antigua, seek second win

ST JOHN'S, Antigua - Jamaica's U-17 Women footballers seek a second straight win when they face hosts Antigua & Barbuda in a Group B World Cup Qualifier today, starting at 3:45 pm (2:45 Jamaica time) at the Antigua Recreation Ground.

In another game, Cayman Islands face US Virgin Islands (USVI) at 1:45. The young Girlz swamped USVI 8-0 on Wednesday, while Antigua lost 0-3 to Cayman.

Jamaica's coach Junior Francis said the hosts have a number of players from their Olympic squad, but he does not see them as a real threat.

"We're approaching the game cautiously as we will be playing our attacking style and we hope to score a lot of goals," he said.

Francis said during the Antigua game against Cayman he identified some strengths and a number of weaknesses in the home team.

"We saw their strengths and their weaknesses and we're looking to dissect them... and hopefully... we'll come out successful," he said.

Following an impressive training session yesterday, both coaches were confident heading into the match.
"With our training session... our game plan and system of play and our whole attacking mechanism was flowing. So basically I feel it's just a matter of how many goals we will score... based on how we performed... in training," Francis declared.

Meanwhile, sweeper Melissa Madden is still suffering from an ankle inury and looks doubtful after twisting the foot during training yesterday.
In the meantime, Carla Daniels - who fell ill on Wednesday evening into yesterday morning with gas pains, has recovered and participated in yesterday's training session.

The team also picked up a new injury yesterday, as Sashana Campbell, the starting left-side midfielder, also suffered an ankle niggle from a tackle by Daniels.

In Wednesday's 8-0 triumph, Jamaica scored four goals in each half, with Shenika Williams (seventh and 75th), Monique Pryce and Vanessa Ramsey scoring two goals apice. Manefa Williams and Sashana Campbell got the other goals.

After a slow start in which the opponents looked threatening in the first 10 minutes, the Reggae Girlz came into their own and Williams opened the scoring when she slipped the ball past goalie Zauditu Amlak after shaking off two defenders inside the area.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
